changing products from Internet Security Suite to VirusScan Plus 2009

Hi friends,

I have 3 Windows Vista PC's that had Internet Security Suite installed a year ago. Knowing that my subscription was due to expire in a couple of weeks, I (instead of subscribing) installed a different McAfee product that was given to me as a gift: VirusScan Plus 2009. The box has a sticker (I'm in Spain so I'll do a rough translation to English) that says: "Update. Version valid only for previous users of a McAfee product). That's me, right? Previous user of a validly installed legal copy of a (different) McAfee product. It installed fine.

But now I'm getting a message that McAfee "Security Center" will expire in 9 days. Can I safely assume that "Security Center" is part of my old Internet Security Suite and I'll be fine with just the VirusScan Plus 2009?

To complicate matters, I only find installed on my PC (in the all programs part of the start menu) McAfee Easy Network (don't use it) and McAfee Security Center... NOT either one of the installed suites! I'm really confused now!

Thanks for the help!

RE: changing products from Internet Security Suite to VirusScan Plus 2009

Sounds like there are remnants of your old product onboard, which also comprised more components than VirusScan Plus.

I suggest you do the following:

1. Uninstall all McAfee programs through "Add or Remove Programs" in Windows "Control Panel".

2. Use the MCPR tool, see this article: How to remove supported McAfee consumer products using the McAfee Consumer Products Removal tool (MC... This will remove all McAfee remnants from your computer. (you must have Windows Vista, XP or 2000 SP4 to use this tool)

3. Launch Windows Explorer and delete all McAfee files in "Program Files" but especially in "C:\Document and Settings\<user>\Application Data" and "C:\Document and Settings\All Users\Application Data". You have to set Windows Explorer to show all hidden files and folders (Tools > Folder Options > View tab). Just delete the McAfee folders even if they are empty in all the "Application Data" folders. Can be more than one!
In Vista: C:\Program Files, C:\ProgramData and C:\Users\yourname\AppData\Roaming
If you can't find these files don't worry. It just means that MCPR has done its job.

4. Reboot and redownload/reinstall your McAfee products directly from your account at the McAfee web site.

You'll have to verify your subscription - use the same email address you used for your previous installation.

Any problems call Customer Service through the link at top of this page, second from left.

won't uninstalling everything mean that on reinstall of the VirusScan Plus 2009 "actualización" (update), there won't be a previous McAfee product to update?

Yes, but you are going to have to do it as you are changing to a different suite.
