Re: Intruder Alert: Now what do I do ?

I have this same problem now, but the curious thing is that it is the same IP address that you quoted in 2010! I also thought that it might be a neighbour but since we do not live near each other I presume not and we are separated by nearly 3years. Is this IP address being generated I wonder by Mc Afee themselves?

Re: Intruder Alert: Now what do I do ?

This is an extremely old thread and the software they were using back then is now obsolete so you might want to contact Technical Support direclty.  It's free of charge by phone or online chat and linked under Useful Links at the top of this page.

In my experience these things are usually something in my own home that is connected to my router either wired or wirelesly.   As I don't use a network I simply set Network to 'not trusted' and messages all stopped.

Re: Intruder Alert: Now what do I do ?

Thank you Peter. I have contacted Tech Support but I will need time and a clear head to digest what they have said to do.

It seemed odd to me that the intruder IP address that Bannerman had in 2010 is exactly the same as the intruder IP I now have: 192.168.1.253

Also the default gateway for my wireless is 192.168.1.254  --- as you can see only 1 number different. BT my ISP say that the intruder is not anything to do with them.

I was wondering if other McAfee customers have had an intruder with this IP 192.168.1.253 and if so what does that mean?

I don't have any other equipment at home that could connect to my wireless. When my daughters visit they have Iphones that use my signal but that would surely not generate an intruder alert when they are not here.

Re: Intruder Alert: Now what do I do ?

It's not odd because it's on your own home network somewhere.   Everyone has similar ones on theirs.   I have similar IP numbers in mine.

It must have something to do with your settings that things are being labelled intruder or not.

Do you have anything "Smart" that uses the Internet connection?   TV, Phone, Blu-ray player etc?

Of course it could be a neighbour I suppose.   Just make sure, if you utilize a wireless router or modem that it is secure.

Also............

Try opening SecurityCenter

Click Web and Email Security

Click Firewall

Click Restore Defaults.

See if that helps.

If you don't use a network....

Then open PC and Home Network Tools

Home Network Defense

Click on your router or modem

Click on My Router (or modem)

Click Don't trust network.

See if that helps.

Sometimes the software upgrades and all settings get changed back to original.

Re: Intruder Alert: Now what do I do ?

I thought that any IP address was unique to one computer only hence my thinking it odd that Bannerman reported the exact same intruder address as mine.

I dont actually have any other internet using stuff in the house.

When I am next at my daughters I'll see if get the intruder message there - which might then eliminate the possibility of it being a neighbour.

My  firewall is controlled by McAfee amd I tried to restore defaults thr' it but I dont think it allowed me to do so.

I also tried the Don't trust network advice but that also didn't work.

Dear David Latimer ,

Thank you for contacting Mcafee Support.
Your service request number for this case is: 1123699094.

Actually Macfee protects your PC from viruses and trojaners, but cannot prevent the infection, if you have allowed the access of unknown applications or web sites on your computer. Besides, there are some viruses that can even block the anti-virus programme. And it does not matter whether this is Macfee or another anti-virus protection.

Provided that your computer has been infected with viruses and trojaners, I can suggest you the following:

Getting free help
Some virus-like symptoms may not be malware-related and might be addressable through McAfee Virtual Technician or information from one of our FAQ articles. The McAfee Consumer Support website is available to you 24x7 at:

If you suspect that your computer is infected with a virus or other malware, or you are unsure if you have security software installed and active, McAfee offers a free application called McAfee SecurityScan Plus. SecurityScan Plus is intended for diagnostic purposes, and does not require any McAfee product be installed.

You can download McAfee SecurityScan Plus at http://home.mcafee.com/downloads/free-virus-scan.

Additional Services
McAfee also provides the following free tools to help you remove malware from your computer:

http://www.mcafee.com/us/downloads/free-tools/stinger.aspx
This is a free tool, which can try and delete the virus.

In case this also does not help, you can use our help in the face of the Premium Virus Removal Service.

I am really sorry for the caused inconvenience.

I am looking forward to hearing from you soon.

Kind regards,
Yuliyan Valchev

Below is what McAfee replied to me which you might find interesting. I haven't yet acted on any of their suggestions as I am nervous of losing access to my computer at this particular time. I was going to try a system restore.

Re: Intruder Alert: Now what do I do ?

Stinger and several other FREE anti--malware products are listed in the last link in my signature below, feel free to try any or all of those.

The Virtual Technician can often fix the software, and can be run as many times as it takes to fix something http://mvt.mcafee.com/

Are those transcripts of online chats?  Or emails?

Best contact Technical Support either by phone or online chat if you do it again,

By the way I branched this to its own thread.
