virus type adds to make me buy antivirus

It is kind of unfair business. I have used Mcafee for several years now, but this time I could not renew. All of a sudden, I get this huge add in the lower right side of the screen, which does not allow me to work, and it insists that I press one of the two options. There is no x to exit without selecting.  Why would Mcafee install this type of virus add on my computer to force me to accept threats or renew protection.  I was actually considering extending but this have me thinking that it is not right.  I might choose another antivirus package just because of this.
