A complaint

Last night the worst case scenario happened. The McAfee product installed on our machine (could be a free trial version, it's been installed for awhile) decided it wanted to do a scan. I don't know if it's because the scan button is very close to the close button and my daughter accidentally started a scan. By the time I came on the scene, the computer was non-responsive.

So, I began trying to kill the process by clicking the close button (i did not see a cancel button). I also tried starting task manager, and using Ctrl-Alt-Del. After about 10 minutes of waiting for the computer to respond in some way. I got tired of waiting for the computer to respond. I pressed and held down the power button to kill the machine.

Please note that prior to this, there was no indication the program was at a critical stage. Maybe somewhere in some standard (not bold or otherwise indicating importance) text it might have said don't turn off the power. But, as it turns out the software was doing something to the boot record of the computer. When I tried to power on the computer, it said my boot record was corrupted. I don't have the resources to make a bootable repair disk. I need to take my machine to a shop and hope that they can recover the data from my computer.

In my opinion, at a minimum, if a program is going to be poking around the boot record it needs to display a bold and prominent warning to not power off the computer. Also, I believe that any program doing something critical needs to be responsive to efforts to kill it. It needs to stop any critical task immediately, get to a safe place, and then confirm with the user if they want to cancel.

Because none of the things I believe are critical were done by your program, I will never buy any McAfee product. I am completely done with your product. And I will forever be a bad reference for your product.

Re: A complaint

The program is probably expired if it's been installed for a while, so would need a subscription to function properly.  I believe, but am not sure of this, that it was probably trying to connect with its home servers in order to check for either updates and/or a valid subscription, that's probably where it seized up.

You could try restarting it in Safe Mode and then uninstall the software in the normal manner via Control Panel > Programs and Features.
