McAfee Tracker Remover deletes Chrome favourites icons

I have been having the very annoying issue of my Chrome icons all being replaced by the generic globe icon. Looking through the community support and online, I see that this is a very common problem, but none of the solutions work. Today, after the notification to run the Tracker Remover, I clicked on Clean. When I opened Chrome, all the icons are now globes. I never had this issue before installing McAfee. Since I can see posts about this going back 5 years+, it does not seem that McAfee has fixed this problem. Does anyone have a permanent solution for this that does not involve clicking on every single bookmark to refresh the icon?

Re: McAfee Tracker Remover deletes Chrome favourites icons

Hi @Hari_durairaj

McAfee version: 16.0 R50
Product Suite: McAfee LiveSafe/Total Protection
Operating System Version: Windows 11 Home Version 22H2
Screen shot of the issue:

First - all bookmark icons are replaced by generic globe

Second - correct image replaces globe when link is clicked on

Third - images randomly change to the wrong image (see screenshot)

Regards,

Peter

Re: McAfee Tracker Remover deletes Chrome favourites icons

The only work around I have heard of is to reload the web site page and it re-attaches the icon. A big PITA if you have alot of web pages. You can open groups of web pages at a time - still a PITA. Unfortunately this happens everytime the tracker remover program runs.

Re: McAfee Tracker Remover deletes Chrome favourites icons

I have just run the McAfee Tracker Remover and the disk clean up tools and all my Chrome favicon icons have changed to globes.

I have fixed this by unsyncing my Chrome account and removing all bookmarks. Then logging back into my Chrome account and turning Sync back on. These are the steps I took:

1 Click 3 dots in Chrome and select Settings
2 In the You and Google settings - click Turn Off next to syncing to <email>
3 Click the box at the bottom labelled Clear bookmarks, history, passwords and more from this device (Don't worry you will get them all back)
4 Click Turn off button
5 Then sign into Chrome again with your email address and password
6 Click 3 dots in Chrome and select Settings
7 You and Google - click Turn On next to syncing to <email>

It should then say syncing, so wait a while for it to complete syncing.

You may see an error message at the top right of Chrome - click on that and enable the extensions that it lists.

Check to see if all your favicons are back (mine were).
