Re: this program keeps popping up! i need help!!

Sadly I did my normal boot up this morning and the DOS prompt box is back Seems disabling Site Advisor in Firefox doesn't work as a permanent fix.

Re: this program keeps popping up! i need help!!

SOLUTION - for me anyway,  running McAfee Total Protection.

This was happening every 10 minutes on one of our computers with XP and IE8 with McAfee Total Protection, but was not happening with another running Vista, also with Total Protection. The following worked for me:

CAUTION - TAKE CARE WITH CHANGING OR REMOVING PROGRAMS as it is easy to make mistakes - I am not being patronising but I know from experience, having made more than my fair share!!

1. Remove Site Advisor

  • Go to Control Panel - Add/Remove Programs
  • Find Site Advisor and click "Change/Remove" and then remove.
  • If Site Advisor does not appear, find McAfee Total Protection and click "Change/Remove". A box will pop up asking which program you wish to remove. Select "Site Advisor" and click "Remove". DO NOT click on or select your main security program by mistake!!!!!

2. When Site Advisor has been removed, reboot.

3. Open McAfee Total Protection

  • Select Web and Email Protection
  • Select the link from SiteAdvisor LIVE (which should show as Uninstalled at this point) and download the latest version.

So far this has worked for me - no more annoying DOS pop-ups. But as with all of these things only time will tell!! Hope this is of some help.

Re: this program keeps popping up! i need help!!

I know many of you joining this thread have not went back to read all the previous pages, so once again let me restate the simplest workaround until the fix is done.....

Just DISABLE the McAfee Site Advisor service.   There is no uninstalling, reinstalling, tinkering with registry, removing or renaming files.....just DISABLE McAfee Site Advisor service.

Here is how to do it very simply.   Open control panel.   Open the "Adminstrative Tools" icon by double clicking on it.   Select the "services" icon by double clicking on it.    When the dialog opens up, scroll down the list until you find McAfee site Advisorand select it by double clicking on it.   In the middle of the dialog you will see "Startup Type" .  Grab the little arrow and select "disabled" and then be sure to stop the service by clicking "Stop" under the "service status" section.    That's it........wait for the fix and then reset the service to "automatic" and you're in business with out all of the hassle.   Of course, you must be aware that the McAfee Site Advisor will not be running in your browser the next time you hit the web, so stay away from those porn and gambling sites where you may drifting into malware territory!!!!!

colin's solution in post #61 above should cure this situation and take only a matter of minutes.  Disabling the service could lead to problems down the road.

Re: this program keeps popping up! i need help!!

That would be a sweet solution if it were possible to just remove the Site Advisor portion of the "suite".   For those, such as myself who have installed the full Ultra Edition Suite, it is all one package and there is NO OPTION  to uninstall just the site advisor.    All of this installing and uninistalling, renaming, restarting, re this and re that is a bunch of CRAP!!!!

There are no problems created by stopping the service.......the program doesn't run, that's it.   Oh....you'll get some notifications in the event log.    Much better than having that prompt interrupt your work every 10 minutes.

Why is it that everyone associated with a software company has the perfect solution to fixing their software.....

UNIINSTALL THE PROGRAM AND THEN REINSTALL IT.........THAT'LL FIX EVERYTHING!!!!

By the way........all these problems down the road you are referring to.......what may they be??????????/

Forgetting how to restart the service possibly?

Re: this program keeps popping up! i need help!!

Disabling any service can lead to problems.   I said 'could', not would.  Yes people do often forget they've turned things off....not everyone is as computer savvy as you think you are.

The uninstall routine isn't confined to McAfee, I've known it fix problems with a whole gamut of software, so the idea isn't new but it does often solve a lot of problems.

Sorry of your version doesn't allow just the uninstallation of SiteAdvisor, some 3rd party branded versions probably don't which is unfortunate.

"...not everyone is as computer savvy as you think you are." Not good PR if you are associated with McAfee! Just tell the guy what he has to do to fix the Ultra Edition Suite, whatever that is. Uninstall/reinstall the whole thing?

Peter, you got yours edited before I got mine posted. You should have edited out that snotty statement, also.

Re: this program keeps popping up! i need help!!

I have never heard of 'Ultra Edition Suite' that must a name given it by whomever supplied the software, an ISP or computer maker perhaps....so I don't know any way other than clicking uninstall that item in Control Panel, it should offer the choice of a complete or partial uninstallation, if not then uninstall everything, run the MCPR cleanup tool in Useful Links at the top of this page, reboot and reinstall from the online account.   That should only take minutes to do unless of course you have a slow connection then sorry, it will take a while.

I was responding in kind to a sarcastic post.   I'm only an unpaid volunteer here and trying to help.
