SiteAdvisor for Win98SE?

Hi,

I am setting up an old computer and want to update it with all the things I find useful on my XP box. I would like to install SiteAdvisor for Win98SE and, although there appears to be a link to download it, it will not download. Is it indeed available? I can connect and download other files, but, in case it is that old computer, is there link where I can download it to my XP computer and just transfer it? The regular link does not connect to a download list but just automatically directs you to the appropriate program for the computer you are using.

Thanks,
Dan

RE: SiteAdvisor for Win98SE?

It doesn't exist any more as Win98 isn't supported by any McAfee home products.

System requirements as per http://www.siteadvisor.com are as follows:

  • Operating System: Windows 2000 (Service Pack 4) / XP (Service Pack 1) / Vista, Linux and Mac OS X
  • Web Browser: Mozilla FireFox 1.5/2.0 (2.0 recommended)
  • Minimum Hardware: 400 Mhz processor, 128 MB RAM, 5 MB free disk space, and an Internet connection

Win 98

Obviously it existed at some point - is there any way to get the old version, even if it is not supported anymore?

Why Win98

Last year I read that microsoft stopped all support for Windows98,
so I wouldn't consider that version safe from then on...

RE: Why Win98

Microsoft no longer support Win 98 or ME - both are now obsolete. Time to move on.

If the computer your building will run 98SE, it will run 2000 just fine. Why not install 2000 pro?

Make sure you update 2000 to SP4.

RE: SiteAdvisor for Win98SE?

Old versions are unsafe versions.

I'd recommend XP, even if Vista has arrived - it's still too new and unstable.
XP is not obsolete; servicepack 3 is coming in a month or two...

More general: Recycling is a good idea, but computers are a BIG exception.

If you still insist upon using an old pc, at least don't connect it to the internet...

RE: SiteAdvisor for Win98SE?

XP's end of life is 2014 unless they extend it, so it's got plenty of life left in it yet and as you say, SP3 is just around the corner.
Although I haven't personally had any major problems with Vista I'll keep my XP too.
Yes it's important to keep things up to date. In another thread I'm trying to persuade an XP Gold user that she needs to update not just to SP1 but SP2 and all the rest. You'd be amazed how many people still resist major updates such as the service packs.
