SiteAdvisor Updating

Whilst I know the toolbar issue has ticked a few people off, my main gripe is with the way SA updates itself, without informing you it is doing so.

Something is wrong when the first warning you get is your registry monitoring program pops up a message about a "browser help object change". In the absence of an update message from SA, it's reasonable to assume it's some kind of malware attack.

I don't even mind (much) if it doesn't give you any option but to upgrade.
What I do mind is not being told about it first.

I don't know any other program from any other vendor doing that. Even Microsoft Update at least lets you know it's working.

I second that ! (Although you can configure your system to give an informational alert, but that's all you can do).

If at least I get a message saying SiteAdvisor is updating prior to getting messages about browser helper objects getting changed, I'd be a lot happier about the situation.

In the scheme of things, siteadvisor taking up an extra row on your toolbars is irritating, but not something that would stop me using the product. If you weigh the two up, ending up having your computer compromised by a dodgy website is far worse than having some screen real-estate taken up.

Thinking I'm experiencing a browser hijack attempt when SA updates itself is far more serious. As if I do what I normally do and block the changes, SA2.8/2.9 doesn't operate properly. If I get it and just think "ah, it's just SA updating" I might end up falling victim to an actual browser hijack.

Although in a bizarre way, the amount of "complaints" is actually a reflection on how very well regarded SiteAdvisor actually is. We wouldn't be whingeing so much if we didn't like it so much. I feel like Linus (from "Peanuts") would having his safety blanket taken away from him to be washed... grin

Double-click on the security center, advanced menu, configure, and you'll see a number of options related to 'warnings'.

WOT started as FireFOx only, but now available for IE as well.

I use both add ons, and they do not conflict, neither in IE or FF.
