Recent Site Advisor Issue

I've had a few issues with Site Advisor in Firefox recently and am wondering what could be the cause. Just this week it seems to work fine one day and then the next the site advisor box is greyed out, there are no site advisor listings on a google search page AND when I click on the greyed out box on my browser it tells me the site I am viewing is safe.. with a green checkmark.

I have McAfee Internet Security, which indeed had an issue with a Firewall issue earlier this past week, but site advisor worked fine after we got all of that fixed.. for one day at least...lol

Any clue as to what could be going on ?

It's been greyed out for 2 days now with NO hint of any thing site advior like on a search page at all... No checks no nothing..

Re: Recent Site Advisor Issue

Check your version, they're rollijng out a new version and this could be either a problem with the new one or the old one failing to talk with the servers (which are also now provided with a new version of their software).

Also, which browser are you using? Have you checked it in another browser to see if it's the same?

Re: Recent Site Advisor Issue

Thanks for the quick response Hayton !

Site Advisor

Version 3.6.1.193

Updated 5/1/2013

Firefox version 21

Haven't tried it on another browser, guess I can start up my Opera and check it out.. I just don't use any other browser much at all... Am very happy with my FF...but I will for this issue and report back.

It's very odd because the day we fixed my firewall issues with the Windows fixit file, site advisor was greyed out initially but later that same day it worked fine. The next day it greyed out again and has not worked since...

Off to try Opera..

edit:

err, I don't think Site Advisor is or has ever functioned in my Opera.. now that I think of it. It certainly isn't there now in that browser. And I don't run any other browser. Just FF and Opera (on very rare occasions).

Re: Recent Site Advisor Issue

Same SiteAdvisor version as I have, which is working okay now in all browsers (I too had problems) except Firefox.

Let me see now ... In FF Add-ons it gives the version as 3.6.1, updated today. Hmm. In the plug-ins it has an entry for SA 3.6.1.113, updated 5 March. Maybe that's part of the reason. Updating the plug-ins doesn't update SiteAdvisor, which it says is "unknown".

Try removing SiteAdvisor and downloading it from the SiteAdvisor website (go to

http://www.siteadvisor.com/download/windows.html).

If the version you get is older than the current version then the new one should come through the next time McAfee checks for updates.

Re: Recent Site Advisor Issue

Your not going to believe this but...

Without doing anything at all Site Advisor is once again working... in Firefox... I've got my little green box on the bottom right of FF and all my searches have the site advisor icons once again... This is SO odd..

BTW my FF add on shows as Site Advisor 3.6.1 and the only option I have there is to disable it.... there is no date or anything.

Re: Recent Site Advisor Issue

I'm marking this as Assumed Answered. My bet is that the different SiteAdvisor versions finally lined themselves up on the servers and your machine and now they can talk to each other again.

In my case I had to reset Firefox and re-install SA to get it to work properly. At least you were spared that.

Re: Recent Site Advisor Issue

Hey,

Well it was fixed .. but today it's all greyed out again. I'm very doubtful it's anything to do with the actual software on my machine at this point and totally something to do with the actual site advisor servers or something. This has been too hit and miss ... on again off again for it to actually be a software issue IMHO..

I'll watch it and see when it turns back on.. which I am sure it will eventually... geesh...

Re: Recent Site Advisor Issue

( Sigh ... )  It's probably the servers. It usually is.

But don't overlook the possibility that your Firefox add-ons might contain something that's interfering with the way the PC-based SiteAdvisor code is operating. The first thing I tried in Firefox was to disable all the add-ons except SiteAdvisor and restart the browser to see if it made a difference.

There may also be something in your Firefox settings that's blocking the PC-server hook-up. You can browse a load of settings with about:config, if you're feeling brave.

In an emergency of course you can either re-install Firefox (which probably won't make a difference since you keep all the old settings) or reset Firefox to its defaults, which - note - deletes all your add-ons as well as wiping out all your preferences. Still, it worked for me.
