Sorry for the long title, but I trying to find out if anyone else is experiencing this behavior? I have a client running McAfee LiveSafe & WebAdvisor who began having IE11 (on Windows 7) start shutting down immediately on launch with the message "Internet Explorer has closed this webpage to help protect your computer"; clearing this message then results in the message "A malfunctioning or malicious add-on has caused Internet Explorer to close this webpage"; clicking on More Info displays a message about a Data Execution Prevention (DEP) violation being caught.
After checking recent updates, I saw that WebAdvisor had been updated on her computer on Wed, 10/21 to version 4.0.1.184; when I rolled back to a backup made prior to that time (which gave me version 4.0.1.167), the problem went away. After some time WebAdvisor updated itself again to v184 and the problem returned. When I uninstalled WebAdvisor completely, the problem went away.
If others can confirm this behavior, perhaps McAfee can locate and fix the problem so we can go back to using this very helpful tool.
Thanx for any reply
Solved! Go to Solution.
Ok, just downloaded latest version (4.0.1.192) from mcafee site and installed on my client's laptop and ALL GOOD!!
Thanx to all posters and McAfee support for dealing with this issue in a timely manner!
P.S. I am not usually the OP in most forums I view since most problems I run into have been seen (and posted about) by someone else; some might call me a lurker, I prefer to think I'm doing my part to keep the Internet a little cleaner! Furthermore, when I do post on an issue regarding software, there isn't much in the way of fixes that are generated based on the posting. So, it is gratifying to see my report of the problem here generate such a positive result so quickly.
Thanx again,
e
I experienced the same issue myself yesterday, with the following error messages. My first instinct was that something simply was not playing nice. I also am running Web Advisor v4.0.1.184/Internet Explorer11. What resolved my issue was to (Temporarily) Turn off your Personal Firewall.
Attempt to navigate to this page per se, and see if it works. Secondly Turn back on your McAfee Personal Firewall, and (Restore) Default) Setting. You should be able to surf and access sites with out Internet Explorer (Crashing).
Please confirm if this worked for you.

I might add that I think this has more to do with being a 'Personal Firewall' issue, opposed to being a 'Web Advisor' issue. Uncertain if I should (Move) to Personal Firewall?
Also I am running :
Windows7 Sp1/ McAfee Total Protection
McAfee Security Center v14.0 5120
Personal Firewall 15.0.5006
I will bring this up as a topic of discussion Monday, on our weekly Conference Call.

have been having issues with IE11 to crashing since updating Webadvisor to version 4.0.1.184. I can open IE but it crashed when I try visit a web page.
2 ways around the problem
1) uninstall Webadvisor
2) stop the McAfee SiteAdvisor Service.
I have uninstalled and re-installed webadvisor. only way for IE to work is with it uninstalled or with the service stopped.

The more that do the better. I also reported it to the WA tech we have contact with
I have the issue as well in the McAfee beta version so reported the issue via the beta defect path as well.
catdaddy, I'm not sure I understand why you think this is NOT a WebAdvisor issue, since both cork71 and myself have demonstrated that the problem goes away when WebAdvisor is uninstalled (or in my case if one is able to roll back to a WebAdvisor version prior to .184) ? Neither one of us did anything involving Personal Firewall.
Also, does anyone know a way to install a previous version of WebAdvisor AND prevent it from autoupdating until this problem is fixed ?
For In my Individual case, I even rolled back to the previous version of Internet Explorer 11.0.23 and It worked fine with v4.0.1.184. The minute I re-installed Internet Explorer 11.0.24, it crashed again. The suggestions I gave you came from support.
It could very well be related to Web Advisor, not working nicely with Internet Explorer 11. Just not so in my case. I followed the suggestions I gave you, and mine is functioning fine. Of course that does not mean yours will. As Colleague Peacekeeper mentioned , please contact support.
Also if you have Web Advisor installed, there is no way to prevent it from eventually updating.
In addition this will be a ' Topic of discussion' tomorrow on our weekly Conference Call.
All the very best,
Catdaddy
I also am experiencing the same Issue. IE 11. Have all update. System is current. Windows 8.1.
I have two computers, one with Win 7 and the other with Win 8.1. Both were getting the "Internet Explorer has stopped working" and "Microsoft is searching for a solution...," and I traced the problem to McAfee's SiteAdvisor Service (WebAdvisor) under Windows Services. I wish I was smart enough to have figure the workaround below, but I followed the instructions in the link below to trace the problem to McAfee's SiteAdvisor Service. I stopped all services until I found the culprit as instructed in the "FixedByVonnie" link below. See if it works for you. It seems to have a problem with Flash content, because Google.com doesn't get the message until I go to a Flash content site like MSN or Yahoo. One more thing for McAfee to look into...my Emsisoft Anti-Malware (paid real-time scanning/blocking) program flags McAfee's SiteAdvisor Service, which I have to Allow in order to use Internet Explorer. Now that it's Disabled, Emsisoft doesn't flag it.
How do I fix the Internet Explorer Has Stopped Working error? - fixedByVonnie
Here's my workaround -
Step 1 - After logging-in to your account, click on the Windows (lower left Start Button) and in the Search box, type Services
Step 2 - When the windows appears on the right hand side of desktop, click on View Local Services
Step 3 - When the Local Services Window pops up, scroll down to McAfee SiteAdvisor Services and double-click on it
Step 4 - When the window pops up, under Startup Type: use the little down arrow and change the setting to Disabled, and click on Apply. Close the window and reboot computer
Step 5 - Go back into Local Services and check to make sure the setting under McAfee SiteAdvisor Services still shows Disabled
Step 6 - Open Internet Explorer and go to MSN, Yahoo, and a few other sites, and click on some links to make sure it's working again without crashing
It's a workaround for now, until either McAfee or Microsoft found out what's happening.
We were just discussing this issue. The workaround to be capable to use Web Advisor, without issues is recommended to.
1- Open your McAfee Security Center
2- Navigate to Firewall
3- Intrusion Detection > uncheck > disable >apply.
This should resolve the 'Crashing Issue'
Kindly post back your results
All the best,
CD
