Error Verifying Site

Although this forum is actually for the browser plug in, you have no appropriate forum for site advisor server side issues so I am posting here as several others have done in the past.

I have a domain (vernonjohnson.net) which is both registered and fully hosted with dreamhost.com on a shared LAMP server. When I attempt to complete the owner verification process it fails.

The error it returns is...

Error Verifying Site

Could not verify the Web site file

vernonjohnson.net*************************************.txt (asterisks replace actual characters)

for the Web site vernonjohnson.net. Please be sure you have placed the verification file in the root Web directory of your site, using the exact file name listed above.

I have verified that the file is present and publicly readable. It is empty however, should it have content?

Is this error generated because I do not have access to the actual physical "root Web directory on the Web server"? The rootmost directory that I have ftp access to is the "/home/username/" directory. If this is the problem, your instruction are insucfficient to correct it. If it is not the cause of the error, than what is?

Once again, this domain is hosted on a shared server running LAMP. What is required to correct this error?

???Support???

Well... so after no replies to this thread I tried the chat based technical support. After 2 chat sessions with courteous technicians who knew plenty about the Site Advisor Client application, and 0 about the "Site Owner Verification Process" I was "Escalated" and told I would receive a telephone call for further help. I got the call this morning from a polite and helpful enough chap, who again knew the client app well, but knew nothing about the issue at hand :(:p

McAfee on the ball :P

So after several fruitless calls from India, two of which occurred on Saturdays, I finally told them they didn't need to bother calling on the phone any longer, and to please use e-mail only from then on. OK, over a month has passed since I have heard anything from McAfee. No one has ever replied to this thread. I finally learned today, that McAfee finally admits the thing is broken (probably never worked), and they are now taking verification requests by email form;););)

Real sharp:p

RE: McAfee on the ball :P

Vernon I'm sorry, but we are all unpaid volunteers here and are spread rather thin. There is always Technical Support (top of page).

This is the standard answer we have been given....

Apparently the SiteAdvisor team is being reorganised, not to mention a new contract is being (or has been already) negotiated and the last we heard was for everyone to use the feedback form HERE.
Failing that
I suggest contacting Customer Service (top of page) and asking them how to contact the SA team directly.

If you are using Chat, disable all popup blockers, or it wont work.

I actually found the link you posted an a similar thread, submitted the form on the 18th, and they manually "verified" the site this morning.:)
