Deactivated file type

My wife and I are using McAfee for scanning emails.  She has encountered a problem that I have not, which is that numerous files coming from students and academics at several universities - e.g. MS Word document files - are being "deactivated", so she can't read them.  She is certain they are harmless, or at least, is prepared to risk opening them anyway; but we cannot find out how to a) find these files, and b) reactivate them.  I have been searching here and on the web - presumably in the wrong places because I am sure we cannot be the first to have had this difficulty.  Will anyone out there help us, please?

Re: Deactivated file type

Solution is found!  The files were Word docs and my wife had not yet installed the program.  However, I am still puzzled as to why it would have that effect - it doesn't seem logical to me.
