“0054741217450586mcinstcleanup” service remains

Problem with “forced” upgrade of SiteAdvisor. XP SP3 Home IE7 environment successfully using McAfee SiteAdvisor until yesterday’s “forced” upgrade which hung my environment requiring a power off re-boot to recover it.

Reboots were very slow, 3 minutes longer than usual. I now see that there is a new Service “0054741217450586mcinstcleanup” set to Automatic. After several reboots, all of which were very slow, I uninstalled SiteAdvisor via Add/Remove Programs.

Boot time back to normal, but “0054741217450586mcinstcleanup” service remains.

Mitigating Variable: I run IE7 using DropMyRights and this reduced rights state was in effect at time of yesterday’s “forced” upgrade.

How can I get rid of “0054741217450586mcinstcleanup” service? Can I expect the new version of SiteAdvisor to function normally if I re-install it after a download that I control myself?

RE: “0054741217450586mcinstcleanup” service remains

If it's SA v.2.8 then it does have issues: http://community.mcafee.com/showthread.php?t=222521
That said, the issues are entirely to do with the user interface. I suspect the installation corrupted somehow, possible due to to that software you mentioned.

Probably the best solution would be to do a complete cleanup and reinstall.

1. Uninstall all McAfee programs through "Add or Remove Programs" in Windows "Control Panel".

2. Use the MCPR tool, see this article: How to remove supported McAfee consumer products using the McAfee Consumer Products Removal tool (MC... This will remove all McAfee remnants from your computer. (you must have Windows Vista, XP or 2000 SP4 to use this tool)

3. Launch Windows Explorer and delete all McAfee files in "Program Files" but especially in "C:\Document and Settings\<user>\Application Data" and "C:\Document and Settings\All Users\Application Data". You have to set Windows Explorer to show all hidden files and folders (Tools > Folder Options > View tab). Just delete the McAfee folders even if they are empty in all the "Application Data" folders. Can be more than one!
In Vista: C:\Program Files, C:\ProgramData and C:\Users\yourname\AppData\Roaming

4. Reboot and redownload/reinstall your McAfee products directly from your account at the McAfee web site, not from any CD that you may have.

If you are McAfee direct customer, go to https://us.mcafee.com/root/login.asp and log in to download your McAfee products.

If you received your McAfee products from your service provider, please use the list below to download your software.

Comcast users should go to https://us.mcafee.com/root/login.asp?affid=108 and log in to download your software.

DELL users should go to https://us.mcafee.com/root/login.asp?affid=105 and log in to download your software.

Gateway users should go to https://us.mcafee.com/root/login.asp?affid=370 and log in to download your software.

eMachines users should go to https://us.mcafee.com/root/login.asp?affid=365 and log in to download your software.

RE: “0054741217450586mcinstcleanup” service remains

I’ve downloaded, executed the McAfee Consumer Products Removal tool (MCPR.exe), and rebooted twice.

The Service “0054741217450586mcinstcleanup” still exists. I’d set it to “Manual” from “Automatic” prior to the removal tool execution.

There is also a group of SiteAdvisor 2,8,0,255 cab, dll, ini, inf, exe, et al files still extant in C:\WINDOWS\Temp\SiteAdvisor that seem to be the back up of the version being automatically replaced when that process failed. I can delete these myself.

How can I remove the abandoned McAfee “0054741217450586mcinstcleanup” Service?

Have you tried booting to Safe Mode and removing the files/folders? Safe Mode is reached by tapping F8 repeatedly while booting up.

Sometimes MCPR has to be run twice.

Otherwise I would suggest contacting Technical Support Chat linked in my signature. It's free and they are open 24/7.

RE: “0054741217450586mcinstcleanup” service remains

Ha! Success.

I had no problem deleting the left over SiteAdvisor folder described above. I deleted it using Windows Explorer in normal mode.

After several reboots, the orphaned 0054741217450586mcinstcleanup Service remained.

I found a procedure to remove a Service from XP at The Elder Geek:

To Delete A Service:
1) Start | Run and type cmd in the Open: line. Click OK.
2) Type: sc delete <service name(1)>
3) Reboot the system

Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600]
(C) Copyright 1985-2001 Microsoft Corp.

C:\Documents and Settings\CWH>sc delete 0054741217450586mcinstcleanup
[SC] DeleteService SUCCESS

This Service seems to have caused Event Errors “The McAfee SiteAdvisor Service … hung on starting” until I changed the 0054741217450586mcinstcleanup Service to Manual from Automatic.

Other symptoms of the “forced” upgrade besides the system unresponsive requiring “power off” recovery were several instances of Dr Watson errors: “Internet Explorer and Windows Explorer The program is not responding. EventLogSource=Application Hang. But these may be an artifacts of the generally hung Windows UI that I attempted to solve via multiple TaskManger “End Task” events.

(1) You need to know the “actual service name” as opposed to what Microsoft calls the “Display Name”. The actual service name can be obtained by double clicking the Display Name of the service using Services (services.msc). In my case the “Display Name” and the “Actual Service Name” turned out to be the same, i.e. 0054741217450586mcinstcleanup

Very strange that you had to go to all that trouble, but at least it's gone. Can I mark this solved?

"Can I mark this solved?" asked Ex_Brit.

Yes, thank you.
