mcods.exe.mdmp issue with on demand scan

Hi,

I am encountering a similar problem to the ones seen in these posts:

http://forums.mcafeehelp.com/showthread.php?t=199271&highlight=mcods.exe.mdmp

http://forums.mcafeehelp.com/showthread.php?t=216366&highlight=mcods.exe.mdmp

Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be any conclusion to these posts and I can seem to resolve my problem.

If anyone knows how to resolve this issue it would be greatly appreciated.

FYI:

I am running Virus Scan v13, using Windows XP Professional, Version 2002, SP 3

The error does not always occur at the same point in the scan.

Error signature:
szAppName : mcods.exe szAppVer : 13.0.218.0 szModName : mcscan32.dll
szModVer : 5.300.0.2777 offset : 002315f0

Error Report Contents:
C:\DOCUMEN~1\USER\LOCALS~1\Temp\WER908d.dir00\mcods.exe.mdmp
C:\DOCUMEN~1\USER\LOCALS~1\Temp\WER908d.dir00\appcompat.txt

I have saved the text files of the Dr.Watson report if it will help.

Regards,

IB

Lovely Support,
Wait weeks for a reply to a problem and get spammed.
Well guess who will not be renewing his or his family's McAfee Security Center...

RE: mcods.exe.mdmp issue with on demand scan

blaser77, I apologise for the spam, it's a universal problem. That user has been banned and the post deleted.

As to your problem, as unpaid volunteers we try to answer as many posts as possible here, but if we don't know the answer the chances are it wont get one.

If the suggestions in those threads didn't help have you tried Technical Support? They can at least escalate a problem on request and even go into your machine to check things out.

They are linked at the top left of the page or in my signature.

Meanwhile I'll do some research and see if I can find anything to help you.

I can try to alert the McAfee developer who answered elsewhere if you wish, but it probably wont be seen until Monday.

Well thanks ExBrit,

I was under the impression that this was the support.
I also didn't realize you are all volunteers, if that is the case then thank you for your efforts and I apologize for the grumpiness.
I'll try your suggestions.

If you wish I'll also alert William Yang of McAfee who helped out in other threads.....hopefully my email wont go into his junk file.

RE: mcods.exe.mdmp issue with on demand scan

IB,

Could you please send me the crash dump files? mcods.exe.mdmp is the most important one.

C:\DOCUMEN~1\USER\LOCALS~1\Temp\WER908d.dir00\mcod s.exe.mdmp
C:\DOCUMEN~1\USER\LOCALS~1\Temp\WER908d.dir00\appc ompat.txt

Meanwhile, could you please also try to isolate the problem by:

  1. Launch MSC (McAfee Security Center)
  2. Scan
  3. Let Me Choose
  4. Uncheck following options

    • Tracking Cookies
    • Stealth Programs
    • Critical System Files

    • Start, to see if the scan can finish without problem
    • If scan can finish, then recheck above options one by one to see which one to blame

You may post your observations or send to me (wyang@mcafee.com) along with crash dumps.

    Thanks,
    William

RE: mcods.exe.mdmp issue with on demand scan

Hi William,

Thanks for the info. My McAfee appeared to be working properly but it is now acting up again. Last night it finished an entire scan, but then today it crashed again....

I tried a manual scan with the following unchecked: Tracking Cookies; Stealth Programs; and Spyware and potential threats. Unfortunately I do not see a 'Critical System Files' option to deselect.
Even with these unchecked, the virus scan crashed.

I will also send you the dump files.

RE: mcods.exe 50% cpu and never finishes

You don't state what operating system and service pack you are using or if you are up to date with Microsoft updates, nor do you mention what version of McAfee software you are using.

Double-click the taskbar icon to open Security center
Click "About" at the bottom right-hand corner and post the versions from each module. You may have to use the right-hand scroll bar to see them all.

While in the Security Center, click "Advanced Menu" (bottom left)
Click Configure (left)
Click Computer & Files (top left)
Click Advanced in the right-hand module
Click Custom Scan (left)

Try the two options that I've highlighted in the attached thumbnail (click it to enlarge) to see if they help at all.

Pausing Scan

I had a problem with my XP system failing to respond. I found the cause to be mcods.exe hogging the cpu.

Via Google, I found this thead (or a similar one) on the McAfee site and found some good ideas.

For what it's worth:

One of them promptedme to open the McAfee icon in SysTray, which offered me an option to pause the scan. That cleared up my original problem.

Occasionally, the options pop-up to re-enable scanning or leave it in a paused state. I think that reminder is useful.

HTH,
Richard
