i have a virus/trojan which is not being picked up by any of the scans i have run.

the virus/trojan is  redirecting my searches to random sites all over the place, mainly to ask.com.if i search direct from the search box it is ok but if i click on a link then i can end up anywhere.the name mugyra.org keeps cropping up.it will not allow me to do a system restore (even in safe mode).

i really do not want to do a clean install if i can help it.

what can i do,hijack does not pick up anything either.

Re: i have a virus/trojan which is not being picked up by any of the scans i have run.

This link from McAfee is provided to begin to rid your computer of infections.

I also suggest you try to download Malwarebytes www.malwarebytes.org and SuperAntispyware www.superantispyware.com both of which are free and very effective in identifying spyware and malware. Let them clean up and remove anything they find. Just follow the directions that are provided. Sometimes virus and malware will prevent you to download new programs in order to attempt to clean out the infections, so you may want to consider rebooting in safe mode before attempting to install.

Good Luck

Re: i have a virus/trojan which is not being picked up by any of the scans i have run.

Whichever program you use you may need to install it to another folder ie renamed from the standard name as before you run them you must update the program to ensure the lastest updates. Some trojans block security software from accessing updater sites.

I had a similiar issue today on my son in Law's PC. Search redirected to ad sites and all security software would not update. I copied the install file of the program I used to a usb stick and renamed the setup file. When I installed it I choose a different folder name to what was suggested. This allowed the program to update and thus find the hidden trojans. All fine now.

Re: i have a virus/trojan which is not being picked up by any of the scans i have run.

I have the exact same problem!! I just got off of the chat with the McAfee support who told me I need to pay the $89.95 to have the virus removed.

When I run scans, and it does not register. I'm always very careful about which websites I visit and what I download. I've had my laptop of over six years and have never had a virus or issue.

The support person told me "infections can sometimes occur silently, when we visit any website containing malicious code. Otherwise, a user can allow an infection by installing a program or plug-in, hiding malware within its code. These programs are often disguised as free search utilities, screensavers or are even labeled as "Critical Software Updates". Even a protected PC can be made vulnerable under such circumstances."

I can also type in a website in the address field and I can go there with no issues. It's when I go to any search engine website and type in a website I would like to visit and then once the list comes up and I click on the link, it "jumps" to another website. I noticed it said "JUMP" on the top of the tool bar last night.

Here's a few of the website's it goes to, none of which I have ever visited before:

  • blanksgetout.net
  • cewatch.com
  • 3705.asklots.com/jump2/?affiliate=se1&subid=93705&terms=gac (GAC being the original website I wanted to visit)

I also had a box pop up when turning on the laptop Remind_XP.exe. I wasn't familiar with this so I removed it. I do have Windows XP on the computer, so I'm not sure if that's related to this or not. It just looked very strange.

Does anyone know if this is a spyware that may allow someone to view my files or obtain bank usernames or passwords from my PC?

Thanks for your suggestions on how to get rid of this malware. I really can't afford to spend $89.95 to have McAfee take this off my laptop.

I feel they should do it for free since I purchased their software to prevent this from happening in the first place!

This is VERY frustrating, to say the least.

Have you done any of the suggestions I initially posted to the first user who originally posted this thread?

Re: i have a virus/trojan which is not being picked up by any of the scans i have run.

Hello,

Yes, I did download both the Registry Mechanic and the Stinger applications, but neither fixed the issue. In fact, they made it worse. The Registry Mechanic just wanted me to purchase their software to fix the issue.

After I ran both, I tried searching a website through Yahoo again, this time a different website, Sprint.com, and I got Tazinga.com instead. I noticed it said "affiliate" on several of the web addresses, so I wonder if someone is getting paid everytime this happens through a retailer affiliate program.

I called the Best Buy Geek Squad and asked if they are familiar with this issue and they said they are, and they will charge me $199 to fix the problem. I just can't afford to spend even the $89 right now through McAfee since I am disabled.

Does anyone have any suggestions? I'm afraid to log into my bank account or use a credit card to pay bills on line while this is going on.

Thank you so much for your help!

Mary

I forgot to mention that I also ran the Malwarebytes.org software too, with no luck. on 5/22/10 4:47:38 PM CDT

I really don't recommend the use of any registry type of software as they seem to mess things up even more. Just curious if you have any relatives or friends that have any knowledge of computers and how to deal with this stuff?

Thank you for replying. No, unfortunately, I don't have anyone in the family to help me. I will uninstall the two registry software programs and try the others I haven't already tried.

Thanks again for your time and help. I greatly appreciate it!
