Re: Where to start redirecting search results virus

I find it very discouraging that McAfee doesn't have a fix for a problem that should have been prevented by their software.

I had a McAfee tech rep assist me yesterday. Apparently their level of expertise is pretty low. They had me clear out my temp files, cache, cookies, history, etc. Duh....I already did that and of course it didn't work...either time!

Is McAfee aware of the problem and is it something they are actively working on a fix for??

Re: Where to start redirecting search results virus

This problem is well known "on the 'Net" even if it is raising a blank stare here. I had the problem as well a month or three ago - that problem was resolved using free software like "gooredfix". Looking that string up with Google should give you enough solid links to find out how to fairly quickly resolve your search redirect problem.

Re: Where to start redirecting search results virus

If you check out the Google results, you'll find (I believe I remember - I am not infected now so can't check) that the results, when you mouse over them and look at where they will go when you click, that would normally redirect through Google itself are the only ones that get redirected (that is, the links that Google gets paid for, I believe). In addition,  believe I remember that the redirect only happens ONCE. As such, you can right click and "open in new tab", then do it again and get to the NONredirected site.

Don't hold me to either of those - I'm going from memory - but I believe it is so.

Here's a single result from that search to get you started: http://www.ghacks.net/2010/01/14/fix-uninitiated-google-redirects-with-gooredfix-firefox/

Re: Where to start redirecting search results virus

HALLELEUJAH! Thanks so much for all your patience, Dinz! Dinz got into my computer and spent HOURS over 3 days to find what was in my computer. Turns out there was some kind of virus that had gotten into my computer one or two years ago through games I played from Yahoo games and laid dormant til now-if I understood it right being borderline computer-illiterate. My faith in McAfee and its people is now officially restored. My renewal is coming up in two months and I guarantee-McAfee has a customer for life now! Thanks again, Dinz, an absolute AAAAAA++++++++ to work with!

And just one more note-it's not certain if it was the game or some ad running on the page but it sure has taught me to be even more careful even when on a site I trust!

Re: Where to start redirecting search results virus

Yes, this virus or something like it is apparently back a year after te 2010 post. It just started happening to me as well.  Some of the other forums online suggested things as varied as 'Delete your cookies and strengthen your cookie/privacy policy' which hasn't worked to downloading utilities from sites, I'm frankly not that trusting of.

Does anyone, McAfee techs included, have any good proven, safe resolutions?

Frankly, I'm pretty disappointed McAfee didn't prevent it in the first place, which is why I keep my Security Center subscription always current.

Re: Where to start redirecting search results virus

Many these types around what I suggest is as follows

Update your dat files and scan your PC with Virusscan in Safe Mode.

To do this, tap F8 repeatedly while booting up. You'll get a boot screen with choices. Pick Safe Mode. Your PC will boot in a low resolution state as most processes won't be running. Go to "MyComputer" (XP) or "Computer" (Vista), right-click the hard drive and select "Scan" from the drop-down menu. You'll see an extra taskbar icon which will show a progress report if youhover over it.

If you think you have a virus infection on your PC do one or both of the following :

- Run the free Mcafee Stinger program from http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/ -

- Join the McAfee Getsusp group at https://community.mcafee.com/groups/getsusp30-beta-feedback

Download herethe  latest version https://community.mcafee.com/thread/32269

Before you use Getsusp, you should go to this document

https://community.mcafee.com/docs/DOC-1323

and download the PDF file explaining what Getsusp is and how it works, and this document

https://community.mcafee.com/docs/DOC-1761

which downloads the installation guide PDF document.

If you want a second opinion, or to be on the safe side, then you can do a scan with the free versions of these tools :

Malwarebytes and SuperAntiSpyware

If you already have Malwarebytes installed, the virus could be protecting itself against it. In that case, in order to get Malwarebytes running you'll need to rename the executable. Open theC:\Program Files\Malwarebytes Antimalware folder, then rename the "mbam.exe" file and double-click directly on the file to open the program. After updating the program, run a full system scan usingMalwarebytes.
