Virus Scan, " Scanning: Rootkit" ?

Whenever I ran a virus scan today, "Rootkit" showed up where it usually shows the file being scanned (C:, etc). Is this normal, or supposed to happen? Here is a picture of what I'm talking about below. The scan completed after this picture was taken and it said there were no issues, but I'm overly cautious.

Yes, what it really means is that it's scanning for rootkits.   No need for panic 😉

Hi Andrew,

Please follow the below Knowledge Base article and post back if you are seeing the issue. Do Restart the machine after following the steps in the article and then Run a Scan.

Re: Virus Scan, " Scanning: Rootkit" ?

@ Selvan,

Not certain if this issue is system specific or not, however I did have a friend contact me and was experiencing the same issue still. He runs McAfee Total Protection/Fully updated and current. But does have (alot) of "Add-ons" and uses Firefox as his browser.

I am happy to pass along to you, that the (Workaround) solved his issues. In his particular case, it (Hung for 17 minutes)

            Thanks for all you do.....

Re: Virus Scan, " Scanning: Rootkit" ?

I have been encountering the same behaviour.  Progress indicator shows Scanning:  Rootkit

although the scan does complete.

Tech Support tried to tell me that 'Rootkit' was the base directory where Windows stored all the OS files!

I could not find anything in McAfee knowledge base.

I finally found the posts here.

I followed the steps listed in http://service.mcafee.com/faqdocument.aspx?id=TS102052  ...

When I try to run ModifyCntxtId.exe, I get an error message box that says ModifyCntxtId.exe is not a valid Win32 application.

I am running  WinXP Pro SP3 on a Toshiba Tecra A7.  Does this patch fix the progress display, or the scan hang?

Re: Virus Scan, " Scanning: Rootkit" ?

Yes that fix fixes the scan rootkits halting for ages issue. BY it means scanning for rootkits not that it found 1.

That error message seems a common occurrence so a google search returns. I will get a tech to popin and help you further

Re: Virus Scan, " Scanning: Rootkit" ?

Hi gdragan,

Please run Stinger from stinger.mcafee.com and see if you have any suspicious files. I assume that you have all important windows updates installed.

After checking Windows updates Follow the steps in Knowledge Base article you posted above. Make sure you save the file to Desktop and double click to run. Please Restart the machine and run a Quick Scan; you shouldn't be seeing "rootkits"

Re: Virus Scan, " Scanning: Rootkit" ?

I was just wondering why this fix seems to have started to fail after maybe 1 successful scan? I find I have to keep reapplying the fix to enable a full scan to complete. I did try to submit a support question but the form rejected it saying 'there was an error' Also is a permanent fix not in the pipeline? only this issue seems to have been around for many months now.
