Re: Unable to use Windows after updating the DAT file

Many thanks

A lot of people are going to be caught out on this.  It's very difficult when confronted with the problem to see the connection  between DAT updates and a failing, flaky OS,  getting worse before your eyes.  No internet connection, no restore..... could it get worse.

Sadly, this is going to cost a lot of people heartache, not just out of pocket.  Perhaps by tomorrow most of the techie repairs will be up to speed, but I I was seconds away from a F5 reformat,   for what was being identified as a VUNDO trojan.

Good luck everyone

Re: Unable to use Windows after updating the DAT file

Hello Somer

Presuming you're still awake (sleep being for the weak...)

I won't bore you with the details of my 5958 troubles except to say that since I have NO - Internet acces - Restore - Copy/paste - Drag/drop AND - No CD drive (it's a netbook) or copy of the relevant XP (OEM preinstalled,) I'm in a bit of a fix!

What I'll need from you (I think) is an exe file that I can download to a USB key and then (hopefully) have it unpack and install itself and FIX the thing.

As to how you can compensate us all - I'll leave that to you...

In the meantime, have fun and don't work too hard!

Re: Unable to use Windows after updating the DAT file

Hey Mick!

Try this for me:

  1. Start your computer in Safe Mode.
To do this, press F8 during Windows startup. When you see the options, select Safe Mode.
  2. Open My Computer.
  3. Navigate to C:\Program Files\McAfee\VirusScan.
  4. Delete the DAT folder.
  5. Press the CTRL, SHIFT, and ESC keys at the same time to open Task Manager.
  6. Click File, New Task (Run...).
  7. Type cmd and press ENTER.
  8. In the command prompt window type the following command and then press ENTER:
NOTE: Type the command exactly, including the spaces.

    copy %systemroot%\system32\dllcache\svchost.exe %systemroot%\system32\

  9. After the file has been copied, restart your computer.
  10. After the computer has restarted, right-click the M icon and manually check for an update to get the new DAT files.

Could you just point out to me where the spaces are...?

Re: Unable to use Windows after updating the DAT file

That's right:

copy  SPACE %systemroot%\system32\dllcache\svchost.exe  SPACE %systemroot%\system32\ ENTER

If you're getting a file not found error, try this one:

copy  SPACE C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386\svchost.exe  SPACE %systemroot%\system32\ ENTER

Re: Unable to use Windows after updating the DAT file

I get the same problem as mick. The file was not be found in dllcache but tried to retrieve it from the OS disc but the only file we found was a file namned svchost.ex_  We tried to rename it but do not know if that is the way to do it? Where can we get a proper svchost since we didn't have it on our computer? Pls note that all the services (workstation, computer browser, print spooler) have startup method automatic but is not running and cannot be started manually. File not found.

Re: Unable to use Windows after updating the DAT file

If you have the windows CD, run a system file checking scan:

  1. Click Start.
  2. Click Run.
  3. Type sfc /scannow, and click OK.

System File Checker will scan the system and attempt to repair the missing file. If System File Checker is unable to locate a replacement file, it may prompt  you to insert your Windows XP disk. Insert the disk to complete the repair process.

Re: Unable to use Windows after updating the DAT file

Somer,

I'm a newbe and not a tech.  I've tried all your suggestions re DAT 5958 and nothing seems to work:  the program file Mcafee\virus does not exist; when I enter the copy copmmand, I get a message "cannot find the file.  I had a live chat with a tech this morning and he gave up, saying that he was going to pass it up to someone better; that was 4 hours ago.  I cannot get onto the internet - no IE, it got deleted Wednesday by McAfee I presume as I had been using it earlier.  Help, please.

Re: Unable to use Windows after updating the DAT file

After copying the svchost file and performing all the tasks mentioned here, I found my XP disk and performed a repair.  I am now operational.

However, nothing here really helped.  I appreciate the effort and the feedback, and I know people are working hard on a good fix.  I spent 5 hours plus on this.  I am not happy with McAfee.

Re: Unable to use Windows after updating the DAT file

I have done that. Nothing is missing. I still cannot get it to work and I cannot get into McAfee.
