Re: Unable to use Windows after updating the DAT file

Ok Mark, you're missing some permissions. Here's what you should have:

Administrators: Full control
Power users: Read and Execute, Read
system: Full control
Users: Read and Execute, Read

File owner should be Administrators, not an admin user.

Can you add those?

Re: Unable to use Windows after updating the DAT file

Has anybody figured out what to do if you used the McAfee removal tool?  Since I removed McAfee I can't get to the DAT file but my system is still acting the same which is no internet even in Safe Mode and no task bar.

Re: Unable to use Windows after updating the DAT file

Gina,

If McAfee is not installed on the system then all you should need is to replace the damaged/missing svchost.exe file. Here are the steps to do that:

  1. Start your computer in Safe Mode. (To do this, press F8 during Windows startup. When you see the options, select Safe Mode.)
  2. Press the CTRL, SHIFT, and ESC keys at the same time to open Task Manager.
  3. Click File, New Task (Run...).
  4. Type cmd and press ENTER.
  5. In the command prompt window type the following command and then press ENTER:
NOTE: Type the command exactly, including the spaces.

    copy %systemroot%\system32\dllcache\svchost.exe %systemroot%\system32\
  6. Restart your computer.

If you get any errors, or it tells you that file does not exist, please let me know and I'll walk you through finding another copy.

Re: Unable to use Windows after updating the DAT file

Hi Somer,

Yesterday evening my McAfee Virus Scanner has been updating on my home computer.

It requested to restart the computer, so we did.

Just a few minutes after having the system running again, beinig busy with an email, I got blue screen.

Eversince I have had it about 30 times till now.

Be surprised: I am using Vista Home Premium SP2. The current DAT version is 5960 and the svchost.exe file is stil there where it belongs.

What is happening!!!

Re: Unable to use Windows after updating the DAT file

Gina,

Ok, we need to do a search. From safe mode, inside the command prompt, type this:

dir svchost.exe /s /b

The search can take up to a few minutes to complete, depending on the number of files on your computer.

Example output:
C:\Program Files\CheckPoint\ZAForceField\Heuristics\svchost.exe
C:\WINDOWS\$NtServicePackUninstall$\svchost.exe
C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386\svchost.exe

So once you find one (the C:\WINDOWS\$NtServicePackUninstall$\svchost.exe is a good example), you're going to copy it to system32. It'll look like this:

COPY c:\windows\DIRECTORY\svchost.exe %systemroot%\system32

(So to give you an example, COPY C:\WINDOWS\$NtServicePackUninstall$\svchost.exe %systemroot%\system32)

Give that a try and let me know please?

Re: Unable to use Windows after updating the DAT file

We've had NO reports of this issue being on Vista machines, or machines running other than the 5958 DAT file.

I think you have a different issue. If you don't mind, go ahead and repost your issue as a new thread and we'll get you some support there. Don't want to confuse people in this thread

Hi Somer,

Updated via 5958. Now on 5960 but won't help.

I opened the thread: http://community.mcafee.com/message/126684#126684

Re: Unable to use Windows after updating the DAT file

Here's a tip for how to do it.

I used a USB to SATA adapter to remove the DAT folder and copy back svchost.exe from a working computer.
