Scanning for virusses / malware / threats

I have a part IT background so where I might seem to be asking some simple questions, I'm trying to understand something that I'm confused about but I need to "build" my case a bit step-by-step.

First question... In general when working on a computer and not browsing the Internet, if I only browse my harddrive / NAS / external devices and do not execute anything infected itself, can I get 'infected' by a virus or malware?

(and if yes, how?)

Hi @TheMissingLink,

Greetings from McAfee.

Your system will not get infected with a virus unless the storage devices, both internal and external does have virus or malware file.

So how will I get infected if I do not execute any infected files then?

Anyone? Please?

Come on... I posted my question here as I was assuming and hoping that the real experts are here. My questions are (still) easy, please help me drill down until I understand something I'm missing currently...
