Recently scanning camera raw (CR2) files has become cripplingly slow. In fact its so low I'm having to turn off the virus scanner to even work with these files. They are benign files and shouldn't need scanning. The scan overhead is so bad it stops a farily high end system to the point even the mouse wont move. Turning off real time scanning immediately fixes the problem.

Actually a reboot seems to have fixed the problem
You got an example file that I can download and try. I am running the new 2012 beta so want to test it and if it acts as you say I can defect report it.
Actually a reboot seems to have fixed the problem
was this immediately following an update?
Sorry, I know there had been an update, but I cannot remeber if I rebooted. I was not getting the "you need to reboot" messages anymore. We are talking about taking 15-30 seconds to scan a CR2 (13MB basically random data) file droping down to an unnoticable time after the reboot.
Could be there have ben 2 patches recently that needed a reboot. Good to see all ok now
