PC freezes during scan

Well, it doesn't exactly freeze but it appears that the scan takes over the machine and it is very hard to do anything. It is even hard to open the task manager.
I have mostly observed (suffered) this behavior when the scheduled scan suddenly starts running. I have even had to turn off the machine by pushing the ON button for a few seconds (I don't like to have to do that).

System:
OS Name Microsoft Windows XP Professional
Version 5.1.2600 Service Pack 3 Build 2600
OS Manufacturer Microsoft Corporation
System Name ALEX-22C55A9CFD
System Manufacturer VIA Technologies, Inc.
System Model VT8365
System Type X86-based PC
Processor x86 Family 6 Model 7 Stepping 1 AuthenticAMD ~1200 Mhz
BIOS Version/Date Award Software International, Inc. 6.00 PG, 12/24/2002
SMBIOS Version 2.2
Windows Directory C:\WINDOWS
System Directory C:\WINDOWS\system32
Boot Device \Device\HarddiskVolume1
Locale United States
Hardware Abstraction Layer Version = "5.1.2600.5512 (xpsp.080413-2111)"
User Name ALEX-22C55A9CFD\Alex
Time Zone Pacific Daylight Time
Total Physical Memory 2,048.00 MB
Available Physical Memory 533.32 MB
Total Virtual Memory 2.00 GB
Available Virtual Memory 1.96 GB
Page File Space 2.39 GB
Page File C:\pagefile.sys

I don't know why it says I have 2GB physical memory. I just installed two Dimms of 500MB each for a total of 1GB. Increasing physical memory did not seem to improve things.

I have:
Security Center 9.3
Virus Scan 13.3
Dat 5773.0000
Firewall 10.3

I also tried to set the scan process to lower priority in task manager but it didn't let me.

Any suggestions?

RE: PC freezes during scan

After reading your post, I think, your system is attacked by malware. Try to format it. Hope this would help you.
