Re: One computer has consistent dat update problems

The logs show that you get downloads from an Akamai server, just like I do. But that server gets the updates from McAfee. So it might be a server problem, but not necessarily a McAfee problem. I notice you're going through a proxy server (nstot.proxy.aol.com). There's an interesting thread about that proxy HERE.

The proxy server would be normal as I am on dialup.

Re: One computer has consistent dat update problems

I think this thread has been hijacked because the problems that are being diagnosed do not seem to apply to my problem but to another set-up.

I have multiple functioning computers using the exact same network connection (T1 line, all computers on the same ethernet hub and same firewall) all functioning just fine, so I don't see how an external server connection (whether from my ISP or McAfee) would affect just one machine and not the other bunch (and be 100% consistent over several months).

I will try Peacekeepers suggestion of a manual DAT update on Monday when I am back at that computer but I don't have a lot of faith since I have deleted ALL the McAfee files including the DAT on at least three occassions and reinstalled everything fresh.  Consistently, I get a new DAT on the update but it fails to update from then on - which seems like a connection problem...but why can I connect to do a fresh install and not connect to do a DAT update?!

Are you connecting through Chrome or IE? Does the net have other issue or only DAT updates

If SecurityCenter still reports that the detection signature file is old, perform the steps below to disable Access Protection and attempt the update again:

  1. Double-click the M icon in your taskbar.
  2. Click Navigation.
  3. Click the General Settings and Alerts link.
  4. Click the Access Protection drawer.
  5. Uncheck Use Access Protection and click Apply.
  6. Browse to C:\Program Files\McAfee\VirusScan.
  7. Right-click the DAT folder and select Rename.
  8. Change the folder name to DAT old.
  9. Right-click the M icon in your system tray.
  10. Click Check for updates.
  11. When the update completes, restart your computer.
  12. Recheck access protection

Re: One computer has consistent dat update problems

Peacekeeper,

I performed the operations 1-10 and the operation failed at that point.  I got a message that said "your programs are up to date" but a red banner that said "your computer is at risk".  When I clicked on the icon (dismiss or details - I don't remember) it said "McAfee cannot update your software.  Please check your internet connection".

I checked the McAfee\Virusscan folder and sure enough, all I have is the "Dat old" folder and no new DAT folder.  It did not update.

I have a rock-solid hardwired internet connection (T1 - 1.5Mbps up/down) with absolutely no other problems than McAfee updates.  What puzzles me is I can uninstall McAfee, delete all related files, and download/install Mcafee just fine, getting a new DAT in the process.  It just will never update again.  And it is the only computer on the shared network (literally plugged into the same ethernet devices) with the problem.

All of my downloads of McAfee for reinstallation have been using Internet Explorer.  However the default browser for this computer is Chrome.  Just for kicks I tried changing the default browser to IE and asked McAfee to update again...still no success.  Same results.

Any further ideas?

Sorry will ask but best to contact support and tell them you uninstalled etc . Ask for an escalation if they run you around.

Mine was OK for a day or 2 , then failed again. It does go through a proxy server as I use dialup. The results from the McInfra Tool are:

Peacekeeper,

Not sure which problem you are addressing but assuming mine.

I am not going through a proxy server.  The PC itself was once part of a system that used a proxy server so it is possible that some trace setting is off somewhere, however I have verified in IE that "use proxy server" is not checked and the PC connects to the internet just fine.  The machine connects to a T1 router by my ISP Broadview.

I also ran the McInfraTool just to see what the connections looked like - and got similar results for both a working machine and the problem machine as follows (note that Hop 5 is different, here being  72.4.240.41 but on the working machine being 146.145.78.222 - both ATX Telecom):

Re: One computer has consistent dat update problems

Went through the painful process of working with Tech Support today.  I was told that I had to go through their flowchart before escalation.  So the Tech did everything all over again including uninstalling McAfee, cleaning with the unistall tool, and reinstalling.  Now I have the correct DAT again for another day.  Tech would not accept that renaming the DAT folder would simulate an out of date DAT (even though I did it and McAfee could NOT download a new DAT).  So apparently I have to wait for the next DAT to be pushed and then call back with the chat number for escalation.

I own subscriptions for 14 computers as part of a small organization and have been loyal to McAfee for years but their flowchart-customer-service is horrid when there are difficult problems being experienced by customers with some product experience.  Sorry for the rant but this repeated experience may just be the push that motivates me to find another vendor for my next purchase.
