I didn't update to this 2010 version. It came down when the computer went to update the data files. Going back to 2009 on this one just lasts a day and then the update replaces it with the 2010 version which is now in my account. So far I have gotten most things to work ok except the automatic updates which I really want to work as somertimes I get distracted and may forget to do it manually. I have ran scans and that works ok, except I do mine manually and always have, usually twice a week. If they can figure out how to make the automatic updates work, will you or someone notify us as there is no sound and notification any more that it has done anythng.
Thanks,
Ron

Well Ron guess since someone from McAfee has not added their comment to this Smart Timer problem they think they have done right with this timer. Well I will never get any automatic updates anymore then and Tony I will not use a beta program to get auto updates. Since I am tired of manually updating I will be stuck with yesterdays 5929 dat forever. Thanks alot McAfee for your Smart Timer which at least Ron and I think is very DUMB. If I had known they added this feature I would not have renewed my subscription. And also they should add the sound option back. Oh well McAfee thanks for NOTHING.

I am in complete agreement with you and I would also like the sound back. Since McAfee doesn't seem to think this problem is worth fixing, I have started to look at other top line virus programs, but really don't want to change as I have had such good luck with McAfee for so long. Now I am wondering if this Smart Timer also does away with the live scan which is supposed to catch anything that may try to load onto your computer as I am doing things when on-line. The 2009 version caught a couple of things and stopped them and gave mean audible alert so I could check to see what was going on. At least back when they had the problem with it going back two days to an earlier Data File Version, they took an interest in it and one of the techs posted some information. I get the feeling from all of the silence that they just don't care and feel that what we get is good enough. If I had acted this way while I was working, the company woud have fired me. I have had to get up and catch a flight all the way across the country to fix a problem onone of the computers or uplinks because the localpeople couldn't even be talked through it. In my opinion the so called Smart Timer should be done away with completely as my older version didn't slow the computer down enough to notice at all.
I would at least like to hear from a McAfee technician that they are going to fix the problem or that they aren't going to bother. Just what all is this piece of crap Smart Timer stopping from working? I wish they would put the 2009 version back in my account so I could download it.

Ron the live scan works ok as mine has caught some trojans right away and took care of the trojans immediately when clicked on some infected links. The only two things I do not like about 2010 version is either get rid of the smart timer or at least give us an option to have it on or off. Plus bring back the option for the sound. I would be a happy camper as I have used McAfee for many years. How hard would it be to add these two options? Every time I manualy updates it tells me you do not have to do anything as automatic updates is enabled. But with smart timer enabled this statement is WRONG!!!!.

SOUNDS:
FWIW sounds don't even play in Win 7 (64) with the 2009 versions, let alone 2010. The explanation that it was d/c'd b/c "most users probably turn it off anyway" is pretty lame -- how could they even know that? Despite corporate claims to the contrary, this is a useful feature, and, if it's an OPTION, then folks who don't want it can turn it off.
SCANNING CONTROL:
Having "all or none" scheduled scans (as opposed to "custom" manual scans) without the ability to exclude certain files/folders based on size, location, file type is also lame (doesn't really enhance my computer security if I have to do away with scheduled scans b/c they take hours and hours and hours while the scanner unpacks and scans zip and other compressed files.
UPDATE CONTROL:
Yes, one can configure auto-update to "notify" when an update is available, for "manual" installation. All it says is that "updates are available". However, unlike EVERY other ISS and standalone AV/AM I've ever used, MSC doesn't tell the user WHAT a given update is -- just a DAT file, or a minor version update (requiring a reboot) or a MAJOR, TOTAL version update requiring (at the least) disabling/uninstalling other security products and (ideally) 2009 versions & rebooting before installing to 2010? So, since I have MBAM and SAS and WinPatrol installed on my new PC which is running OEM 2009 versions of MSC, I have no idea when I will get the 2010 versions. Therefore I cannot take the necessary steps for an uneventful update. I have no doubt that the 2010 update will fail when it happens, b/c A. we are repeatedly told that MSC can't install if the other security apps are present and B. an uninstall, MCPR, update process is better than updating to 2010 over 2009. If it's too hard to McAfee to figure out a way to tell users what's included in an update, or that "a new version of the software is available. do you want to install it now?", this is a disaster waiting to happen. So, I will likely receive my "surprise" version update some time in the future (perhaps before 2011 is released). Install will fail. Computer will not be properly protected. And I will have to endure the entire uninstall all security apps/reboot/MCPR/reboot/pre-install//reboot/download/install process. Hours or days wasted, needlessly.
NOTIFICATIONS:
Most security apps place a widget on the system tray icon when an event happens (intrustion, blocked IP, scan results, etc), but not MSC. I have to manually open the GUI > view recent events > view log > etc or restore > etc in order to find out what's been happening with the program...
SMART TIMER:
Geez, don't even get me started about this one!I was unaware of what a disaster this is.
These are a few of my least favorite things.
I, too, plan to move to another ISS, even though it will cost my subscriptions.
The degradation of useful features, options, configurability,& protection is just becoming overwhelming.
Yes, there are wonderful volunteer and McAfee mods here at the forums.
Without them, I would have been long gone months ago.
But the inevitability of having to move to a more robust, configurable suite continues to grow.
Sadly,
MM
Hi MM even when I have automatic updates set to notify only the smart timer will not let updates show as the programs I run it thinks my computer is not idle. I really hate this smart timer and McAfee should have told us consumers about it before we renewed our subscriptions. I should not have to use a beta version or wait until 2011 product comes out.
Jerry
PS all I have running is yahoo messenger and weather watcher and even if not using mouse it will not get the updates.
Jerry,
I am glad to hear that the real time scan works. And the moderators here are great, but they can only take our complaints and pass them on to the people who should be doing away with this travisty of a mess. I have used McAfee for many years and been happy with it and the service but I am not in any way happy with this scaled down 2010 version. It is obvious that the techs seem to care less as they probably don't use it on their own computers. If they had ran it on theirs prior to dumping it on the public they would have seen what a farce that Smart Timer is. I also tried the option to notify me when an update was ready and it won't work because of the darn timer. They should pull this 2010 version and put the 2009 version back in my account so I can download it.
I did a check of the top virus programs and last year McAfee was ahead of Nortons which I don't care for. This year Norton's is listed as 4th and McAfee isn't even in the top 10. I really wish one of the techs would have the courtesy to get on here and tell us just what they are going to do as I am telling the people that I do some work for to NOT take the 2010 version. I have always in the past recommended McAfee to them and most are very happy with it until now. And the ones that have tried to get help through the chat have told me that they tell them that it is their problem. I think that the upper level techs at McAfee need to address this problem quickly before they start losing customers in bunches. I am going to stay with them for now and see if they will do anything but my patience is starting to weat thin, especially when I have to explain over and over to people that I help that this is a McAfee problem and not theirs.
I do NOT LIKE THIS 2010 VERSION AT ALL.
Ron
By mentioning it in beta bug it points the developers that there is a problem and if they decide to fix it that flows through to 2010 version.
I sent MM's suggestions to them as well. Re tech here they can only pass on suggestions as well as the decisions are made higher up . We will keep the issue in front of them.

Tony,
Thanks for trying to get something done about this. If they had just ran it on their own computers for two days they would have seen that the Smart Timer was not a good thing. I am not sure what you mean by Mentioning it in beta bug. I know that the moderators can only pass on what they hear, but one of the techs could come on the forum and read some of the problem themselves. I really don't want to change to another SS but if they continue to seemingly ignore all the problems with this version I will. My subscription is up very soon and I will wait until then to see if they are going to do anything to correct this mess, but I have already changed the Automatic Pay to NO. This is not some complicated new OS or main frame computer that you can't possibly duplicate every thing that people will do with it. This is a program that could have easily had these problems found and solved if they had just ran it a couple of days themselves.
They should at least pass on to the moderators if they are going to fix this or not so you can tell the customers. This just basically being ignored by the people who created this mess is getting to be a bit old. If they are of the mind set that this is it, take it or leave it, I think there are going to be some people leaving.
Don't take this personally. It is not a rant against the moderators as they have always did a great job of trying to get problems solved. But I think the dropping of McAfee out of the top 10 with this version should get through to the powers that created it and they would be doing everything they could to keep their customers happy.
Thanks,
Ron
Understand your issue I actually reported it to the beta manager 2 mths ago.
As I am a beta mod as well and can report issues there I reported it there to get it in front of the program developers as anything added/fixed is tested there first before release.
Actually they are having a meeting with program developers soon and will place this as well as other thoughts in front of them.
