One Last Question

Ok, I have tried the McAfee Chat with no help at all. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the new Security Center and VS 14. Everything works except the automatic update which will NOT work at all. I have checked all options and everything is set ok. It WILL update manually. My other computer which thankfully still has the older VS13 updates just as it should. This one also did until they sent the new one out. Does anyone else have this problem and if so what did you do to correct it. I can live with doing it manually, I just don't want to forget to do it. Also when I check for the next update it will tell it is due in 10 to 15 minutes. When that time has passed and it never updated I will look again and it has set it out another 10 to 15 minutes and it does this all day long.

I have my computer set with chimes so I can tell when it is looking for new updates. I never hear them which would tend to say this version is NOT looking for them, at least not in my computer. This is not a disaster but I wish it would work like it is supposed to and I am tired of the McAfee Virtual Tech Tool telling me my data file is outdated or that everything is ok when it hasn't updated. All the Chat people seem to be able to do is tell me I need to uninstall and re-install it again and again.

Could someone with contact with the server techs talk to them and see if they have a solution to this as it seems I am the only one having this problem. AndI have no viruses, trojans, or other unwanted things on my computer.I even formatted the hard drive and spent a day re-loading it to be sure and that changed nothing.

Thanks,

Ron

Re: One Last Question

Hmm as you tried a clean install I am unsure why update does not work. Have you checked the settings in navigation updates it is set for auto download? Check the GUI home page and click on updates it should show when the next 1 is it is every 4 hrs.  Check at this time and report back.

Re: One Last Question

Tony,

I have already did all of that many times. It is set to automatically download and install the updates. I spent two whole days watching the time for the next update and it would come and go with no update. I would check and it had kicked it out another 15 to 20  minutes. It does this all day long but won't even try to access te server seemingly as I don't hear the chimes. I was just on my other computer and it updated to Data File # 5926.  This one now shows last update at 5:54 AM and the next one at 5:59 AM. It is now 5:48 AM my time so I will look after the 5:54 AM one is suppose to happen and post what it has changed it to.

This is very confusing as the other computer whch still has VS 13 and the Security Center 9.15 in it works great and will update just as soon as a new Data File becomes available. The fact that it will go right out and update when I do it manually tells me it can access the server and should do so with the automatic update settings. I spent hours looking through optiojs and reading the help filesand everything is just as it should be.

Re: One Last Question

Ok, the 5:54 AM has came and gone and it now shows the next one due at  6:17, which has just passed and it made no attempt to update. The chat was useless as the person I talked to didn't seem to have any idea what to do except uninstall and reinstall which I have already did twice. I also used the McAfee removal tool and manually edited my registry after doing the uninstall to see that nothing was left. Since no one else is having this problem it must be something that I am missing but I have spent hours looking at options and help and can see nothing wrong. The fact that it will update manually tells me that it can acces the server ok, so there is some reason why it isn't even trying on the automatic setting. I haven't done it manually yet this morning as I wanted to wait and see if anyone has any suggestions. The Vitrual Tech tells me everything is good unless I let it go to long and then it tells me that my Data File is outdated.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I only go to aboput 10 sites which I have used for years and one of them is a tech site where I am a tech and help answer questions. But this one is beyond my understanding as everything is correct and it just won't even look at the server for the automatic update.

Thanks,

Ron

Re: One Last Question

Ok this is strange especially as you reformated and the issue still is there. Yes the time does move around unsure why and we reported this but I will ask the techs in our call tomorrow.

Tony this has to do with McAfee's so called smart timer.

http://newsroom.mcafee.com/article_display.cfm?article_id=3620

Scroll down and read under Unsurpassed Performance

I think the smart timer is very stupid because you have to be doing nothing at all to receive automatic updates. I run yahoo messenger and this program constantly updates info so McAfee automatic updates never happen. I have to turn my weather watcher program off too as the stupid smart timer thinks my computer is not idle. If you are moving your mouse arrow around it will not update either. I call this smart timer stupid as I also have to use manual updates to get latest dats.

Re: One Last Question

Ok, now that last post could be my problem as well as I have some things that are almost continuously running and checking in the background. Is there any way to disable this so called smart timer? Even when I am not on-line it won't update and the older one does, so I have things that are continously going on. I guess as long as this timer is there, I will not receive any automatic updates. And I have ran the Virtual Tech several times and the only thing it finds is that my data file is out of date. Everything else is ok. I thought that there had to be something that I had missed as it will update manually ok and everything else works. I never am on the computer when it sits doing nothing for long periods. The older version would update even if I was posting or reading e-mails or whatever. Even if I am working on the computer and not even on-line. So I have effectively wasted three days trying to figure out a problem that I had overlooked.I did see the time kept changing but never saw anything about the rest of that stuff.

Re: One Last Question

Jerry,

Thanks for the link and that is what I am facing as I just verified it. Tonmy, when you talk to the powers that be, would you ask them if they can give us an option to turn this so called smart timer off. That explains why mine kept pushing it out another 10 to 15 minuts and I am never on the computer to just sit and have it do nothing. I missed that page in all of my looking. My computers both run several background processes and are updating them all the time so this timer has to be the problem and explains why it keeps telling me another 10 to 15 minutes and then doesn't update. I can't afford to stop all of my processes every day just so it will automatically update. I have ran the virtual technician so many times I have the log files memorized and all they say is everything is ok except my data file needs to be updated. As I have stated, I can do it manually with no problem. Another thing that I like and miss from the older version was the pop up with the dong that told me when it had updated. But that is a minor thing as I am far more concerned about the automatic updates working. And as I have stateed, everything else is working great. I am retired from the old Bell Labs and rerally keep my computers clean and I do work with several tech groups and moderate on a car site or two.  Somy computer is always busy when it is on, even when I am not online.

Thanks,

Ron

Tony,

Please excuse my spelling. I am trying to do three things at once and get in to much of a hurry and typing was never one of my strong points.
