RE: OnDemand scan errors when scanning large ".rar" files

Just got this from one of the developers...

I know that we cannot scan encrypted files\folders and that we have an issue with folder within folder within folder if the total path exceeds the windows 256 character limit.

That 256 character limit never occurred to me.

RE: Reply

Ken Snell,

Could you please send me (wyang@mcafee.com) following information?

  • OS information
  • information about all installed third party security software if any
  • Screen shots including McAfee UI, Windows Error Report about "memory access violation"
  • Windows Error Report crash dumps files such as
    C:\DOCUMEN~1\USER\LOCALS~1\Temp\WER908d.dir00\mcods.exe.mdmp
    C:\DOCUMEN~1\USER\LOCALS~1\Temp\WER908d.dir00\appcompat.txt
  • Logs files under "C:\ProgramData\McAfee\MCLOGS\VirusScan\mcods" for Vista or
    "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\McAfee\MCLOGS\VirusScan\mcods" for XP and 2K

Meanwhile, could you please also try to isolate the problem by:

  1. Launch MSC (McAfee Security Center)
  2. Scan
  3. Let Me Choose
  4. Uncheck following options

    • Tracking Cookies
    • Stealth Programs
    • Critical System Files

    • Start, to see if the scan can finish without problem
    • If scan can finish, then recheck above options one by one to see which one to blame

You may post your observations or send to me (wyang@mcafee.com) along with crash dumps.

    Thanks,
    William

RE: Reply

Interesting thread. I have one hard drive where all of my zipped files go and after a Macfee update a few weeks ok, complete scans started crashing on me. I came to the forums to check and see if anyone else was having issues as well. I am not sure mine is the character length issue, but could very well be related to zips inside of zips. I have very few directories that go beyond a second level (I think, checking now).

RE: Reply

To William Wang:

I just tonite saw your reply of 11/10/2008 in this thread -- I didn't receive an email notification about it, and haven't had time to check the thread for a number of weeks.

I will send you this information as soon as I can. It may be a couple of weeks before I am able to gather the requested information, but I will do it.

I am quite sure that the 256-character length of path/file name is not the issue, because the earlier McAfee version did not error with the exact same path/file name length as now.

Thank you.
