I pressed cancel during a scheduled scan and the scan hanged. It says scheduled scan is running but nothing happens; the scan status is the same when I cancelled. I want it to stop and start new scan. How can I completely stop that hanged scan? I restarted my system many times still the problem is not solved. Basically, when I press 'cancel' button, nothing happens. Is this a bug in software? What should I do? Any help, ideas? I am using Windows 8.1 64bit and McAfee Internet Security.

Moved appropiately to Virus Scan - By Moderator
At some stages, including when it's scanning for Rootkits as above, it can't be Cancelled and in this case it most likely jammed and all you can do is end the process in Task Manager.. It may be best to contact Technical Support - it's free by phone or online chat and linked below.

VirusScan stops scanning at 98% or 99% complete
Try this work around though 98/99% more usual a stopping percentage
Also cancel is greyed out while scanning system files
You might also want to check the drive for errors, that can sometimes trip up a scan.
Following the instructions on page Antivirus Software and Internet Security For Your PC or Mac | McAfee and running the fix resolved my scan hanging problem.
3 year old thread so will suggest they lock it.
