Re: Latest update causing excessive CPU and Floppy Drive activity

Peacekeeper,

Thanks for your diligent efforts these many months to get a fix for the floppy drive chatter bug and the CPU hog that affected Win XP machines. The bug arrived in a McAfee update that was distributed in March, 2014, and now, over four months later, both problems seem to have been corrected. Unfortunately, a new bug has arrived in the Real Time Scanner update that brought the fix to the older problems.

Now, when Real Time Scanner and Anti-Spam are enabled, the Mozilla Thunderbird e-mail client is crippled -- it takes over five minutes to retrieve a single message from the mail server and sometimes it completely crashes requiring a forced stop, retrieving nothing.Thunderbird 31.0 places a small "messenger" window on the screen when it finds incoming mail and that action is slowed so much by the McAfee AV that Firefox puts this message up:

"A script on this page may be busy, or it may have stopped responding. You can stop the script now, or you can continue to see if the script will complete. Script: chrome://messenger/content/mailWindow.js:193"

This message appears long after the messenger window has closed; choosing to stop the script ha no effect. (Google Chrome is not installed on this machine.)

Thunderbird functions normally with Anti-Spam and Real-Time Scanner turned off. But alas, the fix that solved one problem created a new one and I am back to the same predicament as before -- I have to operate without live anti-virus protection in order to get my e-mail.

Help!

Re: Latest update causing excessive CPU and Floppy Drive activity

Regarding the specific problems with McAfee on Windows XP, there have been reports of compatibility issues. For instance, some users have experienced difficulties with internet security software on Windows XP SP2, leading to problems with email access and system protection notifications1. Additionally, while McAfee has stated that renewing a subscription on an XP machine should not lead to software upgrades that could cause functionality problems, they acknowledge that newer versions of their software do not support XP2. Furthermore, after January 1, 2021, older versions of McAfee software on Windows XP or Vista failed to complete automatic updates.
