Is Total Protection supposed to prevent virus attack?

Hi ,

I've just installed McAfee Total Protection 2010 to my laptop. After installation ,windows internet security ran a scan and found 80+ worms, trojan viruses etc on the machine, however when I ran the new installed McAfee twice after, nothing registered and the message was no action required. Lots of the worms are coming up with 'child porn' in the name, which worries me. In addition to this, all media players, connection to the internet has failed and a message has come up saying that some computer files might have been accessed via internet.

1. is total protection supposed to prevent this happening?

2. where do I go from here.

Hi there,

1. McAfee's Virus Research team is constantly updating its library of 'known' viruses and spyware.  At the core of McAfee software is something called 'heuristic' protection...which looks for suspect behavior by any program or file. So, McAfee woulld stop any kind of known malware from entering your PC.
2. If the PC was infected a way before installing McAfee , it is expected that the computer would be slower in Performance. As of now,  I would suggest to run Stinger scan from here and check if detects any infected files on the PC.

It is possible you had something on machine before hand.You Can run stinger from this link.Also Try to run Malwarebytes from this same link.After Installing & update Run Full scan Malwarbytes.I would keep this free program as a second on demand scanner.https://community.mcafee.com/docs/DOC-2168

Thanks for both replies.

As I can no longer access internet or most other applications from the computer because of this, is there another way I could run stinger?

I ma still scanning using McAfee and it is still saying no virus's found.

You said in your first post that you ran a scan with windows internet security. What is the exact name of the program that you used to scan your laptop?

This windows internet security could be a virus.

Hi,

The scan started automatically, I dodn'y activate anything. It just said 'internet security' and it had a multicoloured diamond shield similar to the McAfee symbol or the windows 'scan' shield. The McAfee scan started about minute after the first one and continued side by side. When the initial scan showed 80 worms there was an option to buy internet protection but I had already bought it with McAfee. There was a few minutes on this internet connection before installing McAfee as I had to log on to activate it.

In saying that  have used this laptop, without antivirus in an internet cafe for 15 months without getting a virus, therefore I'm a bit confused.

Also the symbol for the internet security was at the bottom right hand side of the screen along with all the other symbols

I think I will go down this route. It says that the computer will be accessed remotely - if I cannot access the inetrnet from the infected computer is this still an option?

I for one, am confused.

You state that you have just installed McAfee Total Protection 2010 on your laptop and after "installation, windows internet security ran a scan and found 80+ worms" on your computer.

This is 2012, why install a program two years old?

What is the operating system on the Laptop? Ex. Windows XP Home Edition with Service Pack 3 installed.

How much memory is installed? Ex. 512 MB

Open McAfee Total Protection. Look for About and post the Builds for each item in About.

Being a Novice, you could have installed a fraudulent product.

You can't have two different Anti-Virus products installed at the same time. It makes the computer, unuseable.
