Solved! Go to Solution.
This should do it :
EICAR test files (developed by European Institute for Computer Antivirus Research) allow you to test your anti-virus installation without the risk of a live virus.
If your anti-virus installation is functioning correctly, it will detect the test files as a virus.

Thank you, that worked (mcafee intercepted it ).
Could i ask you another question please? my problem (discribed in this thread) is that tracking cookings are not being detected real time only in scans- so i was worried that it wasnt detecting anything, with the eicar string test i have to click on something - is there a safe way to test if mcafee is working on threats that i dont have to click on ie things that run without me seeing or i am being overly cautious and if it detects the string then that means it detects anything.
Thanks again
