Can't reinstall after Malware defense removal

Jump to solution

Hi-

Sorry if this is in the wrong section, But...

I got infected with Malware Defense, and after doing everything I found online I have it removed. deleted all files, and the registry, and the system restores are gone too.

I'v run stinger, and malwarebytes, and sypbot, and adaware. all are finding nothing.

yet when i try to reinstall mcafee it errors that Malware defense is not compatable with virus scan.

I can find no trace of this on my pc. and I'm pretty much to the reformat option, but don't really want to do that.

Any advise or help? I contacted Mcafee yesterday and the only option they provided me other than you have malware defense and need it removed was the $89.99 premium support. I really can't afford that cost at this time

Thanks!

Hi Capt_Troll,

I'm sure you would have removed all the entries of Malware defense

But this entry will also be present in the Windows Repository

Follow the steps below to resolve this issue :

For Windows XP :

Click on Start -> Run - > Services.msc

Click on OK

Under “Services”,

Select "Windows Management Instrumentation service ".

On the left side panel click on stop service.

Then go to C:\Windows\System32\Wbem folder

Rename Repository folder to Old_Repository

You dont need to restart the computer.

For Windows Vista/ Windows 7 :

Click on Start -> Start Search - > Services.msc -> Run Services.msc as administrator

Under “Services”,

Select "Windows Management Instrumentation service ".

On the left side panel click on stop service.

Then go to C:\Windows\System32\Wbem folder

Rename Repository folder to Old_Repository

You dont need to restart the computer.

Install McAfee

Restart the computer.

Thanks Regards

Mahesh CJ

Mahesh-

Thank You! this was the remainder left. Mcafee was able to install correctly.

looks like the online guides i was reading were missing this step.
