100% CPU usage

I'm using XP and AOL. I've re-installed McAfee 2x. No viruses are detected. Almost every day or two, I get a message "Computer is not protected" and "Cannot be fixed".
Virus Scan then starts downloading and initiating. My CPU usage goes to 100% with mcinsupd.exe at 99%. The starting phase of Virus Scan is never completed.

I've run Cyberdefender and SuperAntiSpyware

Is there a virus? How can this be corrected?

RE: 100% CPU usage

AOL is supplying an old version version 8.* of virusscan and i assume when it says it is not protected the issue is more the bug we all know is present in this version. The fix is update to the 2009 version of Security centre and virusscan but the partners are a tad slow for their own reasons. We have seen this issue in comcast users especially and a simple update will in most cases fix it if they can get it.

The problem is to get your version supplier to update it.

When u get the "not protected" is system guard shown as loaded ie go to run and type msconfig and in services what is the state of system guard, if stopped set it to manual and start it.

Ok going from memory here as not on that version but clicking fix when asked by the popup will say it is fixed when it is not. This is an old issue that mcafee bypassed by releasing version 9, the problem is the partners have not taken 9 on as yet.

All this assumes this is your issue and your PC time correct for locality and country.

Also scan your PC if above not applicable with

I then suggest you try the following two scanners in Safe Mode with Networking.

ESET Online Scanner
MalwareBytes

"Your Computer is Not Protected"

First, I find it hard to believe that McAfee has no idea why my computer is not being protected.

Now, my problem continues...

I've updated AOL to AOL9.0VR......I still have the same problem.. "Computer Unprotected".
McAfee is all updated versions 9.11, 13.11, 10.11 all the most recent.....still have the problem.
I've run ESET Scanner, Windows Malware, Windows Live Scan, Malwarebytes, SuperAntispyware, Cyberdefender
....I still get the message "Computer is not Protected"
Surely, there must be someone that understands what to do ???? I need help!

RE: "Your Computer is Not Protected"

When you updated did you uninstall the old version and run the cleanup tool? If not then you've just carried whatever glitch is present into the updated version.

These things seem to happen to some setups and not others. They could be caused by just about anything.

So if you did not do a cleanup do the following after having temporarily enabled Windows Firewall as protection.

1. Uninstall all McAfee programs through "Add or Remove Programs" in Windows "Control Panel".

2. Use the MCPR tool, see this article: How to remove supported McAfee consumer products using the McAfee Consumer Products Removal tool (MC... This will remove all McAfee remnants from your computer. (you must have Windows Vista, XP or 2000 SP4 to use this tool)

3. Launch Windows Explorer and delete all McAfee files in "Program Files" but especially in "C:\Document and Settings\<user>\Application Data" and "C:\Document and Settings\All Users\Application Data". You have to set Windows Explorer to show all hidden files and folders (Tools > Folder Options > View tab). Just delete the McAfee folders even if they are empty in all the "Application Data" folders. Can be more than one!
In Vista: C:\Program Files, C:\ProgramData and C:\Users\yourname\AppData\Roaming
If you can't find these files don't worry. It just means that MCPR has done its job.

4. Reboot and redownload/reinstall your McAfee products directly from your account at the McAfee web site.

If you are McAfee direct customer, go to https://home.mcafee.com/Secure/Protected/Login.aspx and log in to download your McAfee products.

AOL users should go to http://daol.aol.com/security/ and log in to download your software.
