Re: Updated "Not Protected" thread

A thread in process C:\Program Files\Common Files\McAfee\SystemCore\mcshield.exe took longer than 90000 ms to complete a request.
The process will be terminated. Thread id : 4004 (0xfa4)
Thread address : 0x7C90E514
Thread message :

Re: Updated "Not Protected" thread

Then that is the cause as I thought. The message says

Object being scanned = \Device\HarddiskVolume1\Program Files\Common
Files\McAfee\SystemCore\mfeapfa.dll
by C:\Program
Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbamservice.exe

Malwarebytes and Virusscan tried to scan the same file Disable the MB real time scanning and see if you still have the issue after a reboot. Having 2 real time scanners active will clash.

Re: Updated "Not Protected" thread

TY Peacekeeper..that indeed was the problem...i disabled the MalwareBytes program and was able to have full functionality of the New McAfee Total Protection....so now i will just do a manual scan when i need to with Malware. I appreciate the help.

Re: Updated "Not Protected" thread

In my case, the message is:

Object being scanned = \Device\HarddiskVolume1\Program Files\McAfee.com\Agent\mcupdate.exe
by System

However, I do have Malwarebytes, so I'll try disabling it to see if that's a good workaround.  The messages were alarming at first, but when the whole system locks up for 90 seconds, that's really annoying. I can't tell you how many times I've rebooted before I realized that the system would respond again in 90 seconds.

Re: Updated "Not Protected" thread

Was the MWB the registered version . That will cause this issue as both scanners scan the same file. Please let us know.

Re: Updated "Not Protected" thread

I'm running Windows XP SP3, so I went into the Event Viewer, looked at Application events, and filtered on Event 5051, which for me is "A thread in process C:\Program Files\Common Files\McAfee\SystemCore\mcshield.exe took longer than 90000 ms to complete a request."  Here's a breakdown of how many such events have occured going as far back as December:

December  10
January   12
February   7
March      2
April     81
May 1-4   44
in less than four days!

As you can see, this problem has really escalated for me beginning in April, right about the time the new McAfee 2010 was installed.

When I examine the details of individual events, it's rarely MalwareBytes.  It seems to be random as to what the scanning conflict was with.  I'll do more checking.

I'm not a happy camper with this problem.  Is there a procedure to downgrade to the older, more stable version?

Re: Updated "Not Protected" thread

Peacekeeper, I'm not 100% sure as to what you mean by the "registered version" of Malwarebytes.  I'm using free versions of the following:

Malwarebytes v1.46

Spybot Search & Destroy v1.6.2.46 with systems settings protector v1.6.6.32

Windows Defender v1.1.1592.0

Lavasoft Ad-Aware 8.1.4

Next, I'll do a more detailed tabulation of the 44 events during the past four days (see my previous message, above).

Re: Updated "Not Protected" thread

Okay, below is more detailed information on all my "A thread in process C:\Program Files\Common Files\McAfee\SystemCore\mcshield.exe took longer than 90000 ms to complete a request." events 5051 during the first two days in May.  Here's an example of a complete event application error report:

Event Type:    Error
Event Source:    McLogEvent
Event Category:    None

The only example I could find so far in May involving Malwarebytes is the following:

5/4/2010 at 10:54:00 AM
The process will be terminated. Thread id : 5224 (0x1468)
Object being scanned = \Device\HarddiskVolume1\WINDOWS\Installer\{66D171AA-670F-4309-9C74-5BA7F7DBA0B3}\NewShortcut38_8E832933A07340209FB8DBADC480B69B.exe
by C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbam.exe

Please let me know what conclusions might be drawn from the above examples.  Thanks!

Re: Updated "Not Protected" thread

I asked re MWB as the registered version has an active real time scanner that does clash with Mcshied.

What does setiathome_6.03_windows_intelx86.exe do?

I have asked a tech to have a look over the log.
