real time scanning disabled after dat update

I get the emails advising when latest dat updates are available. the emails usually arrive around 2:30 am (varies a bit) computer is off at that time. I usually turn computer on around 8 am and update takes place automatically usually straight away. This morning the email had arrived but no update took place so I clicked on 'update' ("manual" update) and the update downloaded and installed. Immediately after the pop up "programs have been updated" message I got another pop up, you are not fully protected - real time scanning had been disabled. I have had real time scanning mysteriously disabled before but this time it was definitely immediately after a dat update. As far as I know my McAfee products are working a-ok but obviously this change to settings shouldnt be happening.

Computer is not protected, cont'd.

Yes, I'm quite sure the message pops up following an update. But I've given up and gone to another program. I was getting McAfee free with Comcast, but it's just not worth the hassle. I've done everything I've been told to do with no improvement. And the final verdict was a virus, which hasn't been detected by any antivirus software.

Thanks for your input!

you get it for free?

yes I had got the impression from some posts, that some McAfee users get their McAfee products for free. Whereas here in Australia I pay $70 AUD each year for Virus Scan Plus on 2 computers.
