Guys please take Doug up on this. I reinstated the icon from its place in the recycle bin  I then rebooted no movement from where I placed it as it was after an update as well..

If you have Security Center 11.0.654 and the desktop icon wont go away....

Check the following registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\McAfee\MSC\Shortcuts

Let me know the value of  MSC_ShowDesktopIcon

I found one customer today was missing this registry key which is important.

The registry key was one of the first places I looked,

And found that it no longer existed. I didn't know why, or where that entry may have been moved to-

I thought that was how it is now supposed to be. I surmised this was due to changes made in 11.0.654.

Apparently it IS due to chages made in 11.0.654 but not in a good way.

So do I just recreate the key? I'll try that and see if it makes a difference.

And why was it removed (or rather -not recreated with the new install)?

Nor was it caught by MVT as the log I sent you (Doug) shows.

My beta has the key and no desktop issues

I recreated the 'Shortcuts' Key, DWORD and Strings. I think that did the trick-

I've cold booted twice (one of those times I waited 10 minutes), as well as to two soft reboots (Waiting 10 minutes between).

The Icon HAS NOT RETURNED!

Of course if I had known the Reg. Key was in fact missing and not just changed...

Thank You Doug and Peacekeeper for your assistance.

Where my issue is concerned; I consider the matter closed successfully.

Now there's just the minor issue of why the key was 'missing' (not recreated) at all; and why MVT didn't catch that.

Hmm, my registry is missing the entire shortcuts folder.

But I'm not so tech savvy as sparc4me, anyone can guide me on how to create this registry key?

vinl,

Right-Click 'MSC' create new Key 'Shortcuts'

Go into (click on) Shortcuts

In the right side pane - right-click 'New' Dword

name it as the Dword value in the image (MSC_ShowDesktopIcon)

(No modification of the new Dword is needed)

Right -click and create 2 new 'strings' name them as in the image above.

once created right click each of them to modify the data as in the image above.

(actually you can name the shortcut anything you like it will still work the same)

Hope this helps

Good Luck!

You can use this file to restore the registry key. Again this will only work on Security Center version 11.0.654. It may appear on the older version, but altering it will not help until you get 11.0.654.

McAfeeMSCShortcutsKey

Steps to use the reg file:

Verify you have 11.0.654 by opening Security Center from the desktop icon that won't go away, or the icon in the system tray.

Click About

Verfiy it says Build: 11.0.654 for Security Center

Close the About screen

Click Navigation

Click General Settings and Alerts

Click on Access Protection (to expand the drawer)

Uncheck Use Access Protection

Click Apply and leave Security Center open.

Now double-click the reg file. It may ask if are sure you want to modify the registry. Click Yes. If all went well it will give you a success message. Click OK

If it doesn't import correctly, you should review the steps above to disable access protection.

Go back and check Use Access Protection in Security Center

Click Apply

Close the window.

Now delete the icon and test it by checking for an update.

If this works, I would appreciate the feedback.

Thanks,

Thanks for the feedback sparc. Your MER results were very helpful. Tommorrow I will ask to have MVT check for and add this key as needed. I also need to talk to the developers to ask why this key would not exist on some systems.

Thanks,
