Can't stop the 'Periodic Scan'

I have set up scheduled scanning, and don't want McAfee to run scans at any other time. Every evening when using the computer, McAfee pops up with a 'Periodically McAfee will scan your computer' or similar message.

I'm tired of telling it to remind me later (there seems to be no way to tell it to knock it off). What am I missing here? It's getting automatic updates just fine, and seems to have no other issues, but it keeps scanning when I'm trying to work, and it makes the computer run like a dog.

Some clarification on that scan message.

It just popped up again tonight, and I haven't closed it yet.

The window says:

McAfee | Secuirty Scan

Check My Security Status

McAfee Security Scan periodically scans your PC and checks your security status.
Scan now to find out if your PC is protected.

How can I make this thing stop?

RE: Some clarification on that scan message.

It appears that you have inadvertently installed McAfee Security Scan which is like "McAfee Lite" and comes with things such as Adobe Reader, Flash etc. It's shown as an additional download on their pages and unless unchecked it will install.

(We've already complained about it).

Look for any extra entries other than McAfee Security Center in your Program list and uninstall them.

If that doesn't help then do the following after temporarily enabling Windows Firewall:

1. Uninstall all McAfee programs through "Add or Remove Programs" in Windows "Control Panel".

2. Use the MCPR tool, see this article: How to remove supported McAfee consumer products using the McAfee Consumer Products Removal tool (MC... This will remove all McAfee remnants from your computer. (you must have Windows Vista, XP or 2000 SP4 to use this tool)

3. Launch Windows Explorer and delete all McAfee files in "Program Files" but especially in "C:\Document and Settings\<user>\Application Data" and "C:\Document and Settings\All Users\Application Data". You have to set Windows Explorer to show all hidden files and folders (Tools > Folder Options > View tab). Just delete the McAfee folders even if they are empty in all the "Application Data" folders. Can be more than one!
In Vista: C:\Program Files, C:\ProgramData and C:\Users\yourname\AppData\Roaming
If you can't find these files don't worry. It just means that MCPR has done its job.

4. Reboot and redownload/reinstall your McAfee products directly from your account at the McAfee web site.

If you are McAfee direct customer, go to https://home.mcafee.com/Secure/Protected/Login.aspx and log in to download your McAfee products.

If you received your McAfee products from your service provider, please use the list below to download your software.

Comcast users should go to http://security.comcast.net/ and log in to download your software.

Cox users should go to http://www.cox.net and log in to download your software.

DELL users should go to https://us.mcafee.com/root/login.asp?affid=105 and log in to download your software.

Gateway users should go to https://us.mcafee.com/root/login.asp?affid=370 and log in to download your software.

eMachines users should go to https://us.mcafee.com/root/login.asp?affid=365 and log in to download your software.

MSN users should go to http://membercenter.msn.com/ and log in to download your software.

AOL users should go to http://daol.aol.com/security/ and log in to download your software.

Thanks, I'll check.

Thanks for the reply, I'll check tonight if I can uninstall the 'lite' version.

-Don't you just hate it when software 'brings along friends'? I'm surprised I missed a checkbox. =(

RE: Thanks, I'll check.

Yes I do hate that, if it's not a scan for something or other, it's yet another toolbar that noone wants.

We've told McAfee they got 0 out of 10 for this but the marketing people are a law unto themselves unfortunately.

Uninstall Security Scan from command line

Hi Peter,

I am a network administrator at a small software firm. We use Enterprise McAfee products across our network, so our staff has grown accustomed to seeing 'McAfee' popups as legitimate. The latest Adobe updates have been installed (for people who do not read the license and check the add-ons) with McAfee Security Scan. We have had a large number of calls from our staff regarding popups for the Security Scan and we are looking for a way to uninstall this program at a network level (specifically, through a login script). 'C:\Program Files\McAfee Security Scan\uninstall.exe' brings up a box in which the user must click 'Uninstall' and we would like to force that uninstallation and make it invisible to our end-users. What command-line options are available to force the uninstallation, quietly if at all possible, of McAfee Security Scan?

Regards,

Johnny

Sorry but I have no idea.  You would have to ask that of Support or at least post a  new thread in Business.
