on-access service server stopped

Running Vista

woke up this moring to McA. message: "your computer is not protected"

opened McA: and saw that "Action Required" on "Computer and Files" and on "Email...

I selected "Fix" and after a bit of time got the message "One or more .... cannot be fixed"
also got a MS message window stating "on-access server service stopped" and a finger pointing too McA.

Installed Virt Tech and was 'told' "3 problems found", selected auto fix (id 16508862) and after a bit received message, " some problems could not be fixed"

tried downloaded lates updtaes and thee ever popular re-boot but the issue persists.

any insights appreciated.
