dowloads ok, won't install

I am a long time user of McAfee internet security. I was out of town and when I returned home by subscription expired. I quicky renewed it and downloaded internet security again, but when it went to install the program on my computer it would not install because it said I needed to uninstall a program called webroot spysweeper, it said it had another anti-virus program installed. I do not have this program, but I went to add/remove programs and checked and removed an ad-aware spyware program and restarted my computer.
It still will not download and I don't know what to do, because I have never installed this program it says I have and I cannot find anything else that might be causing the problem. I have the same programs installed as I did when McAfee expired, so I am just so confused what to do. Any help at alll would be so appreciated. I have been working on this for 3 days and don't want to be on the internet uprotected. Thanks again so much for any help anyone can give me.

RE: dowloads ok, won't install

This issue has been reported before....

Webroot Spy Sweeper detected while installing the McAfee products

  • Download the removal tool from:

  • Click Save and save the file to a folder on your computer.

  • Navigate to the folder where the file was saved.

  • Make sure all McAfee windows are closed.

  • Double-click SSCCleanup58.1.55.exe to run the removal tool.
[Note: Windows Vista users must right-click SSCCleanup58.1.55.exe and select Run as Administrator]

  • Restart your computer.

After doing that I would do a cleanup/reinstall of McAfee as follows:

1. Uninstall all McAfee programs through "Add or Remove Programs" in Windows "Control Panel".

2. Use the MCPR tool, see this article: How to remove supported McAfee consumer products using the McAfee Consumer Products Removal tool (MC... This will remove all McAfee remnants from your computer. (you must have Windows Vista, XP or 2000 SP4 to use this tool)

3. Launch Windows Explorer and delete all McAfee files in "Program Files" but especially in "C:\Document and Settings\<user>\Application Data" and "C:\Document and Settings\All Users\Application Data". You have to set Windows Explorer to show all hidden files and folders (Tools > Folder Options > View tab). Just delete the McAfee folders even if they are empty in all the "Application Data" folders. Can be more than one!
In Vista: C:\Program Files, C:\ProgramData and C:\Users\yourname\AppData\Roaming

4. Reboot and redownload/reinstall your McAfee products directly from your account at the McAfee web site.

If you are McAfee direct customer, go to https://home.mcafee.com/Secure/Protected/Login.aspx and log in to download your McAfee products.
