I had not posted here for a while to see if the problem truly had been resolved. After 2 weeks using the laptop several times a day and the pop-up not reoccurring I believe all is well.
I got a couple of calls from McAfee customer support, the first had such a horrendous accent I could not understand but maybe 1 word in 5, but his spelling was fine and when we got on chat we were communicating fine. He did the things support people do, deleted a couple files I knew were not a problem and called it good. 2 hours after he hung up the pop-up reoccurred. Within minutes another support person called to see how things were going, and he was much more understandable. After going through the whole issue with him, he spent close to 2 hours tinkering in my system, and eventually told me my hard drive had a bad sector and that the McAfee was looking for something in that sector and crapping out when it could not find it.
I did scan disk, then a defrag, and have not had a problem since. I was pretty sure i would have to replace the hard drive and did a backup of key files before all that, but all seems to be working fine now.
I know this will not work for most but is something worth considering.
Interesting observation. Bad sectors can cause many problems, notably VirusScan stopping in its tracks when scanning reaches one.
Jools,
Sorry to hear how this is how it all ended up. As a fellow Vista sufferer, I too have a machine at home less than a year old that won't install the latest Service pack, and lately the DVD drive is not being recognized by the PC. It looks like our guys tried everything humanly possible to get your box working right. Seeing the case notes show that you've got crashes with Outlook, Adobe and some other system files...its looking like the best remedy is going to come in the form of Windows 7. I see you got your McAfee product refunded. Even so, we hope to get you back one day.

1 thing to remember is other than a defrag which moves the files around is try chkdsk c: /r in a command prompt. The scan will do it the next reboot and mark the bad sectors as well as trying to recover the data. Use the /f parameter to fix errors.
Worth a go and if it finds bad sectors finish running it and then remove Mcafee with the MCPR tool and reinstall (after a reboot)
One of McAfee updates has totally messed up!! I keep getting a warning pop up box saying my computer is not secure! When I click the button to check this it then says, My computer is secure!! It also will not keep any settings with scan. Very worst part is- before this box pops up, it freezes my comp for about 4-5 minutes, then the pop up box will show. I have never had this problem before with Mcafee and to be honest I"m really sick of this!!
I have un-installed and re-installed, tried doing the online McAfee Virtual Tech support, but once again this box pops up and freezes everything!!
I even tried the Tech online support same deal!
McAfee really does need to address this problem and fast, because for one I will NOT renew my McAfee account again unless this problem is fixed, it is not worth the hastle of not being able to use my computer :<
Can you post a pic of the box then a pic of the GUI saying secure.
I will while you are douing this point our admin here to assist you probably need to call you?
I have un-installed McAfee once again, due to the fact I'm really tired of my comp freezing up every 10 minutes. I would have to re-install once again and deal with the same problem. I can tell you it is a warning box with a red X on it, which states your computer is at risk.
Once I click the button, the Mcafee screen shows all in green and states your computer is secure.
But then the next time, it will show that my scan is not set which it had been for a date and time, so it is not holding anything which is done in settings. This is more then Frustrating to say the least- when you can't do a thing on your computer because of a faulty program.
Hi milva,
Sorry for your frustration, by the time you reinstall your the applications and check the status - please update us with the below information along with your next post ;
What is the operating system of the PC?
Did you previously have any other security software installed ?
What is the version of McAfee virus scan ?
Run McAfee virtual technician from http://mvt.mcafee.com and post your session id here
please Post a screen shot of the error.
Thanks,
Ok you already did that but this time note the MVT session number it shows
I will download McAfee again Sat morning, not looking forward to this with it freezing my comp. Then I will get screen shots to post and all the info on my comp and I do have- McAfee Anti Virus Plus- running windows Xp home. I have had McAfee on this comp now prob close to 3 years with out any problem at all.
I can't run the McAfee Virtual Tech because - 3 times I tried this and it froze each time due to this pop up.
This found 1 issue on my comp which needed to be fixed, did not state what, but on the far right was a listing of Related Files and Diagnostic Details
Think this is the request number which I was given for the online chat- 672240425, they were transfering me to tech support and again my comp froze once this pop up appeared and close it all out.
