Vista with Security Center errors upon McAfee Install

My friend purchased McAfee Security Suite online today and loaded to her computer that is running Windows Vista. After the installation completed, it came up with the following error: mvtapp[1].exe - Bad Image and something about it being either not a valid program or that it was an error. She tried to run the Virtual Technician and continued to receive the same error. She rebooted the computer and initially got the same error, then received another one: mcshell.exe - Bad Image. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to fix this or what could be causing it? Any help is appreciated very much!

RE: Vista with Security Center errors upon McAfee Install

mvtapp is the Virtual Technician so try to find that file and delete it.

Do the following:

1. Click Start then on run and in the run box type %temp% and click on ok.
2. Select all files in the folder by Clicking on the Edit Menu and then on Select all.
3. Press the Delete key and click on Yes in the confirmation window.

and then

1. Click Start then on run and in the run box type temp and click on ok.
2. Select all files in the folder by Clicking on the Edit Menu and then on Select all.
3. Press the Delete key and click on Yes in the confirmation window.

Once all the temp files are gone you should be OK.

RE: Vista with Security Center errors upon McAfee Install

It would not allow her to delete all files (says they were being used by another process or program), so am thinking she will have to try it in safe mode. She deleted what she could, including mvtapp, but was getting the same errors and now says she is not protected. It won't allow her to run a virus scan as it says virus scan and parental controls are not downloaded. Thank you for your quick response, I'd be happy to hear any other suggestions you may have.

Enable Windows Firewall then do the following:

1. Uninstall all McAfee programs through "Add or Remove Programs" in Windows "Control Panel".
2. Use the MCPR tool, see this article: How to remove supported McAfee consumer products using the McAfee Consumer Products Removal tool (MC... This will remove all McAfee remnants from your computer. (you must have Windows Vista, XP or 2000 SP4 to use this tool)
3. Reboot and redownload/reinstall your McAfee products directly from your account at the McAfee web site, not from any CD that she may have.

RE: Vista with Security Center errors upon McAfee Install

Thanks again for all of your help. My friend continued to get random errors with it throughout the week, and this morning the whole system did a crash dump and reset to factory settings. With a whole clean slate she was able to download the Security Suite and it is functioning perfectly now. It's a shame she lost her files, but at least everything is playing well together at this time and she can use the features she needs.

That's unfortunate but it's happened to most of us at some stage or another. Make sure your friend's system is kept totally up to date.

I guess I'll close this thread now although it wasn't really solved. Good luck.
