I have been having this problem for MONTHS! I've reviewed many of the over 170 posts on the subject and have tried several recommendations to no avail. I am just amazed by the fact that over 10,000 users have viewed this thread. So obviously it's a McAfee PROBLEM. Here is my question....
How do I go about cancelling my McAfee subscription that expires in Sep10? And will I get SOME of my money back. BTW I've been with McAfee for several years, but enough is enough!
Susan have you run the event viewer and checked what is causing the issue?
The 10000 is not 10000 users but many views by a lot less users. I view this thread several times a day unfortunately.
Customer service link in the Useful link tab top page will get you to them tho no refund after 1 mth installed. That my thought not mcafee's answer.
I would try the event viewer path.
Ok the techs have contacted a few posters here 7 -8 and all have issues with rootkit infections or 3rd party products present. They are still monitoring 2 users but so far all have been issues with the users's PCs. It would be nice if those users posted back and said so.
It is possibly worthwhile that you go to the virus removal service link in useful links and pay for a checkup . If they do not find anything the cost is refunded I understand. Root kits require specialised removal tools which I do not get involved in. If you are interested in doing so PM me first.

To ensure they do not find something easy run the scanners mentioned below
First try updating your dat files a new 1 that covers the malware might be available. If that gives no joy then:---
Try scanning your PC with Virusscan in safe mode.i.e.
Tap F8 repeatedly while booting up. You'll get a boot screen with choices. Pick Safe Mode. Your PC will boot in a low resolution state as most processes wont be running.
Go to "My Computer" (XP) or "Computer" (Vista), right-click the hard drive and select "Scan" from the drop-down menu.
All you'll see is an extra taskbar icon which will show a progress report if you hover over it.
Then if the problem has not been solved
Download and run the Mcafee free stinger program
Set it to Report Mode (in Preferences) and post the logs of anything it detects.
If things are still unstable or your want a second opinion then to be on the safe side scan with the free versions of these tools:
If malwarebytes was already installed and the virus could be protecting itself against it try this
In order to get Malwarebytes running, you'll need to rename the executable.. If Malwarebytes is already
installed, open the C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes Antimalware folder, then rename the "mbam.exe" file
to something else, like "gogetum.com", then double click directly on the file to open the program.
After updating the program, Run a full system scan using Malwarebytes
Update both programs them before running them and let them clean anything they find. If they quarantine
a file or fails to remove a file try to get a copy of it and send it to Mcafee using the virus submission path described here.

After trying your first three suggestions and coming up with nothing I began thinking it might be a rootkit problem as you suggested, I ran Prevx 3.0. The only thing it seemed to find, other than the keylogger which I know is on my computer because I put it there when my kids were younger AND which I tell every anti-virus, anti-spyware and anti-everything program I have ever had to ignore, were files associated with a program called Thunderpopper which is a POGO (game site) cheat. Ok, so I cheat at Poppit to get tokens....let it go! LOL. Then just for grins and giggles and because I really don't like the idea of spending 90 bucks for McAfee to tell me the same thing, I downloaded and ran Sophos Anti-Rootkit which is running slooooooooooooooooooowly as I write this. I'll let it run through the night and see what I have in the morning. I guess I could always remove Thunderpopper and the keylogger and see what happens.

Pics did not show . We are hoping that the next version/patch will include an exclusion option where we can tell Mcafee hands off certain folders or files though we have been hoping for this for 6 years. Maybe 2010 is a lucky year.
Did you run the event viewer what file did it(mcafee) baulk on?
BigJ and Peacekeeper, thank you! Yes, removing the Garmin installer (and deleting it from the Recycle Bin) seems to have fixed the problem. The timing is exactly right, too, because the problem started shortly after I downloaded the map update.
Don't give up so easily. There is a better way to find a solution. Go to McAfee level 3 and volunteer to work with them to solve your problem. Granted, each user has a similar problem with the "Not Protected" alert. But each has a different and unique set of circumstances and conditions that might be causing the problem. I had this problem on and off for several weeks. Then I connected with a very knowledgable t3 who not only worked with me to solve the problem, but diligently followed up to make sure that everything was still working properly.
So far, I have been free of this problem for about 2 weeks. I changed my "update" option to prompt me before an update is done. I do the updates when it is convenient for me to observe. Afterward, I open McAfee and check the shield to make sure it is still "green" and friendly.
I suggest that you and others who are still plagued by the "Not Protected" alert contact McAfee and volunteer to be part of their study team. It is painless. And I can assure you that they do not take your personal information. They upload only what they feel may be causing the problem and then analyze it in their controlled environment to see if they can reproduce the same problem you are having. Before and during this exchange of information they also correct the problem for you and make the bad alert go away. All it takes is a little patience, while they examine your system (mostly McAfee files and logs) using a collection program called MER with a tool called, "Go To Assist".
"Go To Assist" allows them to take control of your keyboard and mouse, while they review the recent activity in yours and McAfee's logs. Then they make any appropriate changes to the McAfee configuration on your computer to correct the existing problem. Finally, they leave you with a friendly and "green" shield. Also, they check back periodically to make sure that you "Are Protected".
Along with Peacekeeper, I highly recommend this service provided by McAfee. It is free and you have nothing to lose. Go for it!
WildT did they say what was wrong with yours?
The mer program I wanted to post for all you to use but as it has to be analised manually and takes a hour to read the output I was told not to and that any T2/3 would run it. It picks up heaps of info re what could be causing problems
They have not yet determined what had caused my problem. However, it appears to be fixed for now. My problem began shortly after I transferred files from my laptop running XP Pro to my new Desktop running WIN 7. I have not done this for awhile and will try transferring some more files using the "Easy Transfer" cable and software. If it causes the problem to reoccur, I will contact t3 again to collect some more of my files. I agree with you, let the t3 use MER. They know what they are looking for and can do it faster and more efficiently. Besides, that is their job.
Is there any news here??? System locks up for 1-2 minute after update Then I get the 'not protected' notice.It then goes away and according to the events viewer, McShield starts.
