We don't read HJT logs here but there are plenty of forums which specialise in them see near the bottom HERE.
One thing that sticks out a mile...you have several components of Symantec/Norton Security software present which would cause issues with McAfee.
Remove anything "Norton" or "Symantec" from your Control Panel/Add or Remove Programs and then run their uninstaller tool: http://service1.symantec.com/support/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039
Sorry we do not do Hijack this analysis that is better done at 1 of the sites such as bleeping computer etc. Re service I think mcshield as that is the service failing in the error message
I didn't ask you to analyze the HiJackThis log. You asked for a screen shot of my task list, and I thought the HJT log might be helpful to you in interpreting all the listed tasks. Sorry if I went the extra mile.
Okay, here's the latest: On this PC, McAfee no longer seems to be updating. Whenever I try to get updates, it just sits there at 0% completed and spins its little "Checking for updates" wheel forever.
I just tried doing a full scan for viruses, and it aborted after completing 73%. Says it aborted due to an unknown problem and suggested I should try again later. That's after investing hours and hours of system utilization, now totally wasted on the aborted scan. McAfee software has definitely let me down.
My guess is there's some type of infection that McAfee is unable to detect or correct. I'll try searching for it with Ad-Aware, Spybot, Malwarebytes and Windows Defender. I'll also do a HJT analysis. I will also boot up with Bart-PC and do a directory comparison, which can detect rootkits. If and when I find the problem, I'll let you know so maybe you can strengthen your software to be more impervious.
In the meantime, if you have any ideas from all the information that I've already provided, then please advise. Thanks.
Thanks, Ex_Brit. I used the tool to remove the last vestiges of Symantec products.
Looks like I may be out of the woods. The McAfee software noticed that it was unable to get updates, so it suggested several options, one of which was the Virtual Technician. Ran it. It fixed two problems (a registry issue and an out of date DAT file). Now the McAfee software is updating just fine. I'll run a full McAfee scan just to be on the safe side. (BTW, all the other quick scan, i.e., by Ad-Aware, Windows Defender, SpyBot and Malware Bytes, all came back negative.)
I'll keep watching my Applications Event Log to see if the original symptom recurs. Hopefully, not. Wish me luck. Thanks.
OK good luck.
Yep, the Virtual Technician app appears to have fixed everything. I went from a very unhappy camper to a very happy one. I wish all software had such an app. Thanks!
Indeed. Good luck!
Got my first Application Event 5051 in two weeks. Ran the McAfee Virtual Technician again, and it fixed a registry problem, as follows:
Registry | 1 Registry key(s) incorrect | |
|
Not sure if that will fix the problem, and even if so, I have no idea what could have caused it to get messed up again. Will post any additional 5051 errors if/when they occur.
Are you by any chance running registry cleaners/optimizers? They can cause corruption as can infection or other similar application fighting for space. Best to contact Technical Support Chat if the applications start malfunctioning. Linked under Useful Links above.
Footnote, always use a new download of MVT, never any old one you may have saved as it is constantly updated.
