Re: Updated "Not Protected" thread

Thanks appears it is scanning some of its files when Mcshield wants access. That is my guess

Re: Updated "Not Protected" thread

True, when I'm not working on my PC, Seti@Home gets really busy.  However, when I am working on the PC, Seti@Home is suspended.

There are times I'm working on the PC and everything will just lock up.  I can't get any tasks to respond, the task bar doesn't respond, nothing.  Sometimes I can still switch tasks using Alt-Tab, but even that locks up eventually.  When this problem happens, the only thing that still works is the cursor still moves in response to the mouse.  Then 90 seconds later, viola, it all comes back, and there's another Event ID 5051 in the Application log.  It's acting as if McShield.exe is getting stuck in an infinite loop at a priority level above everything except the mouse interrupt level.

Next time my system locks up like that while I'm using it (and therefore Seti@Home is not), then I will post that log and also describe what I was working on and what I saw.

Thanks, everyone, for the help in tracking down this problem.  Very much obliged.

Re: Updated "Not Protected" thread

I've had four more 5051 errors ("A thread in process C:\Program Files\Common Files\McAfee\SystemCore\mcshield.exe took longer than 90000 ms to complete a request."), but none of them completely locked up my PC while I was working on it.  I did witness the first one (at 5:07 PM involving McSync.exe), and I only saw the system slow down, followed by the bubble saying words to the effect, "Your system is not fully protected," which all cleared up within a minute.

Here are the details about those four Event ID 5051's:

Each of the above examples says "by System".  Might it be the System working on behalf of one of my other anti-malware products (Malwarebytes, Spybot, Windows Defender or AdAware)?  I don't seem to have this problem on any of my other PCs (two Windows XP and one Vista), but I haven't examined Event logs to see for sure -- will do later.  They all have Malwarebytes, Spybot and Windows Defender, but not AdAware.  However, the AdAware on this system is the free version, which I don't think has real-time protection.  The only real-time protection (besides McAfee) on any of these systems, insofar as I know, are SpyBot's "Tea Timer" module and Windows Defender.

Ideas, anyone?  Thanks again.

It was associated with the following System Error 7031 some three minutes later:

Event Type:    Error
Event Source:    Service Control Manager
Event Category:    None
Event ID:    7031
Date:        5/8/2010
Time:        8:38:19 AM

Description:
The McShield service terminated unexpectedly.  It has done this 1 time(s).  The following corrective action will be taken in 5000 milliseconds: Restart the service.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

At the time, I was copying a huge (multi GB) file from a FireWire drive to a USB drive.  McAfee notified me that an update was available, so I clicked the button to do the update.  A minute or so later, the PC slowed, panes eventually stopped responding, and eventually even Alt-Tab failed to switch between panes.  However, the cursor always responded to the mouse -- I never lost that.  During most of this slowdown, the hard drive transfer continued, as shown by their indicator lights, but eventually even they slowed and stopped moving.  Finally, a Windows warning "You system may not be fully protected" popped up.  A few seconds later, everything came back to normal, and I copied the above event logs.

Per your suggestion, I'll try disabling SpyBot's TeaTimer and report any changes.  Thanks again.

Re: Updated "Not Protected" thread

To Display the WIN32_EXIT_CODE error that SCM encountered. To display the  error, at the command prompt, type

sc query service name

The  information displayed can help you identify possible causes for the  error.

that from MS.

I feeling is something you are running is scanning the file at the same time Mcafee real time scanner does. Can you post a pic of all active processes ie in ctl alt del ie the task manager?
