I have a brand new Dell Inspiron with Windows 7 Home Premium
It came with McAfee installed and a one year subscription
When I open the security center, on its home page, clicking any of the items (such as real time scan, sceduled scan etc) freezes the security center screen. I have to use the Non of the items are clickable after this and I can't close the window either.
When opening the security center, one can click other items like "help" or "read more" but the moment you click any of the main items on the list everything freezes.
What to do.
In my case I wanted to very temporarily disable realtime scan to install a program that needs this, but of course as a result of the above bug I can't use the security center for anything.
Any help as how to fix this would be appreciated.
Joey
This is I hope Windows 7 SP1? Also please specify what version of Internet Explorer is installed, whether or not you use it.
You could try to start System Restore to go back to before this happened. That can be done in Safe Mode if necessary. Tap F8 repeatedly while booting up to reach it.
If successful don't forget to apply any updates to Windows that came in the meanwhile and to McAfee. (This all will work in that mode).
If not possible try the following:
Boot into 'Safe Mode with Networking' - it's number 2 on the menu you will see when tapping F8 repeatedly while booting up.
Download, install update (important) and run a full scan using the FREE version of THIS tool.
In regular mode open Control Panel. Go to Programs > Uninstall a Program and uninstall McAfee.
Then run the MCPR cleanup tool listed under Useful Links at the top of this page and reboot.
Reinstall from you online account.
To temporarily disable VirusScan doule-click the taskbar icon to open SecurityCenter
Click Virus and Spyware Protection
Click Real-Time Scanning
Click Turn Off and tell it for how lon.

Thanks.
I have Windows 7 SP1 - 64 bit
IE 9.0.8112.16421 (but use Chrome...)
Chrome 16.0.912.63
This is a brand new Dell Inspiron laptop (2 weeks old) that came with McAfee pre-installed. This was the first time I tried the Security Center so I don't know if it ever worked and I don't really have earlier restore points.
So, I tried your second method and made the scan with Malwarebytes free. Nothing unusual was found.
I retrieved my account details. I will continue with the MCPR and reinstall McAfee
Appreciate your assistance.
