Tony

First, congratulations on doing an unenviable job, trying to defend the indefensible.    I won't add to your woes beyond saying that the 654 build hasn't worked for me either.  I'm in the UK and here is my update log:

Re: RE:RE:Annoying McAfee Desktop Shortcut doesn't get deleted permanently - Post 432 & 433

so when, precisely, is the fix going to be delivered?????

- I am in the Eastern Standard Time Zone. (-5 hr)

- I am running build 11.0.649

- I check for updates constantly, but none are available

- I have been waiting for three weeks for the fix and for three weeks I have seen nothing but excuses and delays.

- can anyone tell me precisely when the fix will be delivered?

Maybe my experience with this will help a few people. After weeks of  being annoyed, and many manual and automatic updates, I logged in to my Mcafee account and followed the instructions there to get the 654 version. I selected "custom"  install (no need for anti-spam and some other stuff), and after going through the whole procedure and rebooting, I still had the problem (and still had 649!). So I then followed the instructions given somewhere in this forum, I think from one of the moderators (THANK YOU!!!!) and ran Mcafee removal tool first. Also, I took the full install.  I don't know if it was the tool or the full install, but all is now good. BTW Win7x64 home premium, Athlon 215  dual-core.

Fatherbrian This from Doug a Mcafee tech

If you have Security Center 11.0.654 and the desktop icon wont go away....

Check the following registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\McAfee\MSC\Shortcuts

Let me know the value of  MSC_ShowDesktopIcon

I found one customer today was missing this registry key which is important.

Seems you are No 3 not to get it to work.

To fix it yourself again from Doug

You can use this file to restore the registry key. Again this will only work on Security Center version 11.0.654. It may appear on the older version, but altering it will not help until you get 11.0.654.

McAfeeMSCShortcutsKey

Steps to use the reg file:

Verify you have 11.0.654 by opening Security Center from the desktop icon that won't go away, or the icon in the system tray.

Click About

Verfiy it says Build: 11.0.654 for Security Center

Close the About screen

Click Navigation

Click General Settings and Alerts

Click on Access Protection (to expand the drawer)

Uncheck Use Access Protection

Click Apply and leave Security Center open.

Now double-click the reg file. It may ask if are sure you want to modify the registry. Click Yes. If all went well it will give you a success message. Click OK

If it doesn't import correctly, you should review the steps above to disable access protection.

Go back and check Use Access Protection in Security Center

Click Apply

Close the window.

Now delete the icon and test it by checking for an update.

Tony

Thanks for the above.  I found that the registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\McAfee\MSC\Shortcuts is missing:

Unsurprisingly, following the procedure has no effect on the registry.  Thoughts on the next move, please?

Registry key added as per instructions, manual update done, then two restarts.

The icon hasn't reappeared so far but I'll advise for certain tomorrow.  Meanwhile, thanks for your help Tony - much appreciated.

McAfee did not automatically update the fix for the desktop icon issue, I had to reinstall the software myself. Then, the fix did not work until I manually changed the Registry. Makes me wonder if they cannot even update their own software correctly what are they doing with the critical anti-virus updates?
