Mcshield.exe High Virtual Memory Usage

Unfortunately, This should have been taken care of.As this was a huge issue last year also.If you look to the right on top of this page.You will see many like this.Dating back a while.I am Not sure how Mcafee could repeat the past After last years disaster.I can certainly relate as I dealt with this last year for for nearly 4 months.To sell software that basically leaves a computer useless for long periods of time.With no fix is basically asking people to go elsewhere.I also still experiance this Mcshield high Cpu drain.But only during a scan.The bigger problem is the Mods can only relay the message.But...Who is listening??I think everyone understands things can take time.How much time is why people are leaving.Much the same with the other problems.

The techs reached the end of their competence. They spent probably more than 12 hours logged into my machine on about 8 occassions. They told me that McAfee needed weeks more to work the problem.  Check against McAfee Service Request Number:484570-725448553. The techs gave up and said there was nothing more they couuld do for weeks. Only then was I forced to buy Norton.What was I supposed to do? Wait weeks more and waste more evenings of my life and suffer a computer that was intermittently unusable?  The techs involved know it wasn't fixed. Don't blame me for them not fixing it. They are welcome at any time to log into my machine and re-install McAfee and demonstrate a solution to the problem, or identify what non-McAfee issue causes it. Meantime, my laptop runs sweetly, and Norton have my money. McAfee didn't even offer me my money back.

Hi All,

The problem is this in a nutshell.

There are other manufacturers of Anti-Virus product out there. Norton has already released Norton Anti-Virus 2012 product.

Unless one has ran Norton 2011 Version, they can't say that Norton Anti-virus 2012 Version is exactly the same  as the previous year.

Norton Product especially the 360 offers the ability to turn off Anti-Virus and Firewall by right-clicking on the Notification Area and Disabling and Enabling one of both without launching the Main Window. I know people, who I help through LogMeIn running Norton over McAfee.

The Business version of Norton has other stuff included that Consumers don't need or probably want.

This isn't an advertisement for Norton, but a wake-up call to McAfee to put back in stuff that was removed from McAfee, when McAfee was a very good product.

But I will admit that McAfee was always CPU heavy when Real-Time Scanning was always on. That's why, I always had Real-Time Scanning off and ran Multiple Scheduled Scans. Instead of excluding files and folders, you were able to Create a specific schedule for say your Email Store Folders.

I'll stop receiving further notices from this thread. I don't think this issue is a priority for mcafee.

Not that I think other anti-virus firms would show more care. But in any case... This is a pretty bad experience.

I just got off a chat session where I have escalated to Tier 2 support.  They will email me and I will have them tell me what they need in the way of logs and I will send that information to them.

Hi all - I found this thread when searching for what is causing my very high winlogon.exe memory usage (if I leave PC on overnight, will consume 1.7 GB of my 2 GB of ram, or so task manager says....).  I had ignored posts that mentioned mcafee for weeks (I've had this problem since early July or so).  I also had high mcshield.exe memory and cpu use, but I just took that for granted that it's a PIA.  But, I've had to restart PC multiple times a day just to be able to do things b/c of winlogon.exe taking over ram and also spiking CPU time every few seconds.

After reading every post on this thread back to the earliest, I decided to try turning off real time scanning...and my problem is GONE.  Winlogon.exe has remained at the exact value it was the second I turned mcafee real time scanning of (81K, which is high but the soonest I could stop it from ts 1k a minute rise...).  I did leave on the firewall and also have all pc's in my house behind a router.

With real-time scanning on. winlogon.exe takes over the machines cpu time and ram, eventually, and mcshield typically rises up to about 150K.  I'm constantly shutting down mcsvhost.exe, which consumes about 30k and is always cycling up to take up to 30% cpu time.  Typically upon startup, mcafee and winlogon consume so much that my system is unusable for at least 10 minutes, until these processes have "calmed down."

As a data point for you guys, here's what I'm running:

Dell Dimension 4700 Pentium 4 2.8 ghz, 2 gb ram, 170 gb h/d, Windows xp sp3, Mcafee Total protection 11 (installed in April 2011).  This PC is about 5.5 years old. I have about 25gb of music files and an equal amount of photos.   I run office 2003, visio 2000, IE7 (usually 5 windows or more at once), and often itunes, adobe, and photoshop elements.  Sometimes all at same time.  No gaming.  I also run (once a week), malwarebytes, superantispyware, spybot, and windows defender, but none of these are normally running.  I've given up attempting anything but quick scans with mcafee.  If I try to run a "full scan", it can be 24 hours and I'll only reach about 15%. 

I've been shopping new windows 7 machines because this problem has been so debilitating.  Is the answer to ditch Mcafee?  I have read that rolling back to total protection 10 might help, not sure if I can do that with my yearly subscription.  My comcast internet provided has free Norton, but I hear that's worse.

Hi ivanaernmore,

You have too much protection in your operating system, which is why you are having problems. Do you have Spybot  installed in active or passive mode? Are you aware that McAfee has built-in Spyware protection?

Is your other Anti-Spyware programs running in the background while you are trying to do a Full Scan?

The SR is 740728174.  By the way, right now, everything is very slow.  Page File is up around 900 meg to a gig and cpu is jumping around from about 20% to 80%.  I'll reboot and see what happens.

Hi thecreator, thanks for the reply.  I do not run ANY of spybot, malwarebyes, superantispyware, or windows defender in the background at all - I have specifically disabled each one from automatic startup and/or running in the background via services.msc, msconfig, or the program itself (was tricky with windows defender).  I have verified this via process explore.

I try to run at least one of these once a week.  I lost confidence in mcafee for trojans and spyware a couple of years ago, when all I ran was mcafee and I got hit with Vundo and with some trojan that was constantly killing my wallpaper, etc.  Malwarebytes and superantispyware fixed these, mcafee found nothing.  Maybe mcafee got better since then, but ever since the start of summer my pc has had the high memory usage on winlogon and mcshield issue that seems to behave like what I've seen on the web. 

I have no problem trying uninstalling all those programs and checking my pc again running just mcafee; they are all free and can be reinstalled.  However,  prior to July 1 or so I had at least superantispyware AND spybot AND mcafee all running in the background including real time scannin on all... and never had the winlogon.exe issue.  Someting happened either with microsoft or mcafee, I think.  And since all seems fine when I disable real time scanning on mcafee....

I know its not great to have real time scanner disabled, but I've been trying to go only to known web sites or use another pc (posting from work pc, which is a laptop running xp sp3, but with symmantec, no winlogon  or real time scanning issues whatsoever)
