Re: McSvHost.exe causes error on Shutdown

So last night I updated McAfee manually and updated Ccleaner and I didn't get the message. But I just tried it now and the message is back. As for the printer thing-I never leave my printer on. And if we have to manually close the file every night, what is the point of having the software if it doesn't work correctly?

The very first day I got this message I had tried to open a pdf file that didn't open successfully. Could the two be related? Also I talked to a computer specialist (that isn't mcafee) and he told me that kind of error is usally related to a root kit issue.

Re: McSvHost.exe causes error on Shutdown

This is happening to me on two different computers. Both running XP2 Professional. McAfee Total Protection 2010 installed from the web with help of a McAfee agent on one computer because there were installation issues from previous trial versions of McAfee that had been installed and then uninstalled in order to upgrade to a full version of Protection 2010. The agent used a downloaded McAfee tool to get everything cleaned out, so there should not have been any remaining issues in that regard. On the second computer there had been none of the uninstall/reinstall issues whatsoever, and that computer, nevertheless, is still getting McSvHost.exe shutdown errors, as well. Isn't this something McAfee could fix with an update instead of asking users to get into the start/run functions and possibly delete something out that causes even worse problems? Cannot do a screen capture because the error code appears upon shutdown and there is no way to either save the image or copy it down, as it goes by so fast. Also, best I can recall, this issue only began to occur after McAfee, in one of its recent updates, had a pop-up box notification of a new interface for Total Protection 2010. As I already had that newer interface due to downloading from the web during the installation process, the pop-up had nothing new to show me, so I went ahead and closed it. Could that be what is causing problems for me and others?

Re: McSvHost.exe causes error on Shutdown

OK, here is the temp fix.  Open explorer and click on the search button.  search "McSvHost" no quotes no period no exe.  select all drives.  click search.  On the found pannel display veiw details should have been selected and sytem and hidden files should be allowed to display first before the search.  Where you see it in the location windows/prefetch rename the file by changing McSvHost to McSvHost1...... Next where it says the location is allusers/  or where ever you installed it directory rename the exe file to mcsvhostx.exe and that will stopthe error.  This program is used to log all the diferent parts of the system on your machine. removing it just makes it go back to the old log system for now.  Mcafee will have a fix soon.  Thank You and have fun with this method after searching the Internet and looking for programs in your task manager that don't look lagit.  Search the Internet and if the answer is that it is not needed than try renameing it being sure you backup and have a way out if the boot fails. Contact me at this forum for more help with temp fixes.

OK Best not to disable mcsvhost as it is tied into most of Mcafee programs . It has been mentioned in another post that disabling it will disable the firewall. I would expect more than that so for the moment please do not follow this suggestion I have asked Bala and the T3s for comment. ( Peacekeeper Moderator)

Thank You Moderator,

Look he is right about the services stopping.  Also there are many other issues.  As I mentioned this is a temp fix.  The issue was posted in order to allow these guys to see that it is the Mcsvhost program that ids the problem.  I also said that it has to do with logs and to contact me.  That was for free and no one has the right to judge if someone is nieve or whatever.  From what I can see Mcafee has some enimeis or they just don't have it anymore because it is farmed out to some other company.  As a programmer for many years any aplication that writes to protected memory is written wrong, so I don't know.  What I say has no effect on what any comany does.  I'm shure next time you should call the tech support line before you buy software to see what you get.  At least Toyota apologized.  The real problem is that we are in love with XP and it's going to get worse.

Re: McSvHost.exe causes error on Shutdown

In reply to Peacekeeper.

As regards installing Mcafee products, my FIRST installation on both computers was from the Mcafee CD-ROM i purchased. When this finished downloading, the Mcafee icon was a "shield - red shield, white around the edge, white M in the middle" This has never changed since I changed to 2010. The previous 2009 version had a "square icon" This has never been the case for me with the 2010 version.

My main pc STILL has the installation from the cd-rom. My netbook has had the cd-rom version removed (still had error on cd-rom version), and had the web installation installed (still error), then the netbook developed a fault (non mcafee) so I wiped hard drive, reinstalled windows then mcafee again from the web. Still had the error message even after fresh install. As mentioned, my MAIN pc has now encountered the error on shutdown... which this never used to... making me think this is a download from mcafee thats caused this error to start appearing.

Peacekeeper mentioned the folder McSvhose.exe. If I do a search for this using "search" on my computer, there IS a folder named this.

I have 2 entries of McSvhost:

1, MCSVHOST.EXE-364816B1.pf in location: C:\WINDOWS\prefetch

2, "picture of the Mcafee shield" with McSvhost(no exe) in location: C:\Program Files\Common Files\Mcafee\McSvhost.

Whether this is useful Idont know.

Also i will list the build / version I have:

Security centre:

Version: 10.0

Build: 10.0.570

Affld: 0-898

Last update: 11/03/2010.

Virus Scan:

Version: 14.0

Build: 14.0.306

Last update: 02/04/2010

DAT version: 5939

DAT creation date: 02/04/2010.

Engine version: 5400.1158

Version: 11.0

Build: 11.0.378

Last update: 11/03/2010

Also peacekeeper, I tried what you said in a previous post, Start->run->services.msc-> stop mcafee network agent... still had error on shutdown.

Re: McSvHost.exe causes error on Shutdown

STOP. Please do not disable McSvHost.exe as described in post 239. This will also disable a significant amount of important McAfee functionality - see my post 182. And for what purpose? Just to stop a tedious error message at shut-down. There is no evidence that McAfee is not working for the majority of us during runtime, in fact there is plenty of evidence that it is working just fine. Everything appears to behave as expected and for further confirmation I have loaded a virus test file and this was instantly detected. Also, a few days ago I had a website trojan stopped. Don't lose your important malware protection!

The advice in post 239 is either naive or malicious.

Re: McSvHost.exe causes error on Shutdown

rabbit2...I totally agree with you about the renaming of McSvHost.exe!!

It isn't or doesn't seem to be doing anything to my computer, not slowing it down, not affecting any programs.

I would never do that...hope no one else does either.

When I did my wild card search, I got almost 3000 files associated with it.

My friend still didn't get the new interface as an update.

I have always felt McAfee works through too many different channels...third party sellers...poor customer service, until now.

Also, the packaging of a BETA version or an older version in a new box..simply very poor marketing.

Now they have to sort this all out.

We seem, here, and with the higher level techs (and all the work of a few forum members) to have narrowed down many elements of the appearance of this error message.

Something as simple but BIG as my being so busy writing down the message and numbers as to miss that all my error message were

I will keep checking back and be available if McAfee wants to do another "takeover" on my computer, since I am getting the McSvHost.exe.

Dinesh said they would close me out as a non-McAfee problem because I told him I didn't have the McSvHost.exe, when, in fact, I did.

I would have given up on McAfee shortly after this started if I hadn't come here.

No matter how good other programs are, computers and programs at some point in time have problems, conflicts...and simply switching to another one that works when I get it, doesn't mean, all will always go well with it.

Re: McSvHost.exe causes error on Shutdown

I have put a warning on that post. I would expect some of the Mcafee programs to be disabled if you disable mcsvhost therefore have asked Mcafee for comment. I expect an answer Monday.

Re: McSvHost.exe causes error on Shutdown

Windows XP SP3..same darn error here "McSvhost.exe" upon shutdown.

Does anybody notice if it is worse when the Security level is set to Stealth mode?

Does anybody expect a fix soon?  I hope that we are still protected in the meanwhile (I hope that one of the previous posts was right).....sigh.

Should also mention that this was the online version that was automatically updated by McAfee.

Happy holidays to all!

Please hurry McAfee...we need this fix ASAP!!!!!

I don't feel that I want to disable anything yet at this point...

Re: McSvHost.exe causes error on Shutdown

Does anybody know if this is going to be fixed soon, or do we just need to uninstall McAfee, ask for a refund, and purchase a different program? There are far too many people experiencing this problem and it is hard to believe that McAfee is just letting us hang out to dry on this.
