RE: McShield and McProxy = Resource Hogs

Disabling those processes disables protection.

5868ms is only 5.8 seconds so I don't think there is anything wrong with that. 40+ seconds to start up is kind of long but is there another protection software present perhaps? Or is the current installation an upgrade from a previous one?

It may benefit from a cleanup and reinstallation.

As it's the weekend there wont be many people from McAfee around here to help so it may be faster to use the Technical Support Chat line available through the link at top left of this page or in my signature.

Otherwise try:

1. Uninstall all McAfee programs through "Add or Remove Programs" in Windows "Control Panel".

2. Use the MCPR tool, see this article: How to remove supported McAfee consumer products using the McAfee Consumer Products Removal tool (MC... This will remove all McAfee remnants from your computer. (you must have Windows Vista, XP or 2000 SP4 to use this tool)

3. Launch Windows Explorer and delete all McAfee files in "Program Files" but especially in "C:\Document and Settings\<user>\Application Data" and "C:\Document and Settings\All Users\Application Data". You have to set Windows Explorer to show all hidden files and folders (Tools > Folder Options > View tab). Just delete the McAfee folders even if they are empty in all the "Application Data" folders. Can be more than one!
In Vista: C:\Program Files, C:\ProgramData and C:\Users\yourname\AppData\Roaming
If you can't find these files don't worry. It just means that MCPR has done its job.

4. Reboot and redownload/reinstall your McAfee products directly from your account at the McAfee web site.

If you are McAfee direct customer, go to https://home.mcafee.com/Secure/Protected/Login.aspx and log in to download your McAfee products.

If you received your McAfee products from your service provider, please use the list below to download your software.

Comcast users should go to http://security.comcast.net/ and log in to download your software.

RE: McShield and McProxy = Resource Hogs

Thank u for your comment Brit, be grateful.

I upgraded from IS 2008 to IS 2009 through renewal yesterday. But the fact Mcshield process slows down startup persists even after the upgrade. I expected that this process could be chopped down in size or optimized by development team in new version, but I was a little disappointed this time. I can show u the log history, Mcshield process in IS 2008 took even longer during the startup--around 10 seconds more than IS 2009...

One more thing worth noting is that client(even though I am a power user myself) cannot disable real time scanner service by himself, no matter you use service mmc or msconfig.

In service mmc, disable option is simply grayed out.
In Msconfig, if you uncheck the service and apply, system will check it again for u automatically....

Well, I am a software developer myself, and I am keen on keeping my computer running only necessary services at any running instance. I've disabled/changed to manual most of the startup services to improve startup time, and finally got this big worm- McShield.exe. Lol.. The gay thing is that I paid $50 letting it stay in my laptop and I cant do anything about it but uninstall....as you know, uninstallation need to be planned TOO for serious user.

One more point, IS 2009 doesnt work with windows Defender at all, you need to disable the whole process from loading.. Well, I mean from software engineering perspective, this is an intrusive designing, at least, user should be given some kind of options or notifications about that, instead of searching google for the solution to "Application failed to start..blah blah...".

OK, U have a good weekend Brit!

RE: McShield and McProxy = Resource Hogs

The upgrading may have messed things up that's why I figured that a complete cleanup and re-installation would probably sort it out. Try it as I described above.

By client I'm not sure what you mean other than limited user perhaps? They can't alter settings in the same manner as an Administrator.

I have the 2009 software working in XP SP3 & Vista SP2 alonside Windows Defender with no problems whatsoever. With Windows Defender it gets disabled when McAfee is installed bu you can re-enable it afterwards.
