Greetings,
I had to rebuld my laptop this past weekend thinking it had memory issues. Ended up being McAfee. heh..
Anyway, I downloaded and installed the latest McAfee SecurityCenter. I don't like program icons on my desktop so I usually delete the icons,
Everytime I restart my computer the McAfee icon ends up back on my desktop. It's like a bad malware program, and I find it very frustrating.
How can I get rid of this icon?
Thanks,
-Matt
That should have been taken care of in the current version, however all is not lost, there is a fix here: http://service.mcafee.com/faqdocument.aspx?id=TS100906&lang=en_US&prior_tid=2&AnswerID=16777216&turl...
Thanks so much for such a quick response!
However, when I click on the link I get an redireted to an Error page. -
Could you double check your link?
Thanks,
-Matt
Try right-clicking it and opening in a new tab as it works fine for me.
Basically what it says is...
Step 1 - Download the ICON Display Tool from the URL below and save it to your Desktop:
http://download.mcafee.com/products/licensed/cust_support_patches/ICONDisplayTool.zip
Step 2 - Disable Access Protection
- Double-click the M icon in your taskbar.
- Select Navigation.
- Select General Settings and Alerts.
- Open the Access Protection drawer.
- Clear the checkbox beside Use Access Protection.
- Click Apply and close SecurityCenter.
Step 3 - Expand the ICON Display tool
Step 4 - Run the ICON Display tool
Step 5 - Enable Access Protection
I have this same problem...... I can't get any of the solutions on this site to work for me...
I am a gamer and don't want any desktop icons on my desk top except for the games I am playing... I've used desktop clean up and the solutions here.. nothing works...
This McAfee icon keeps re-appearing on my desk top.. I have used McAfee for years and just renewed my account and now I can't hide the Icon... If I can't stop this... I will find another brand... Any help would be greatly appricated.. I use Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 SP3
I've got the same problem as Arthur. I received an update a few days ago and now the icon has started to appear on desktop again. Had this a year or so back, and the instructions posted by Ex_Brit worked then, but no longer. The icon briefly disappears but reappears on reboot after a short period.
As the OP says, I don't like any icons on my desktop. I tend to put things there as a reminder that I need to take some action.
Have a desktop and a laptop both running Windows 7 64-bit Home Premium, and problem present on both.
This is a known issue that arrived with the latest update to the Security Center. The techs are aware of it.
