Hi starryeyed,
What is your operating system and version of Internet Explorer installed? Do you have the original operating system CD or DVD to reformat and reinstall thre operating system, if need be?
Have you tried creating a new User ID? Your User ID may be corrupt.
My operating system is Windows Vista, and I have Internet Explorer 7 installed.
Unfortuantely, no, I do not have the original operating system CD. This computer is several years old, and the CD was either lost a long time ago, or never came with the computer to begin with.
No, I haven't tried that.. what do you mean by 'create a new user ID'? Do you mean making a new User Account on the computer?
Hi starryeyed,
That is exactly what I mean. Created and try a new User ID and log into that Account with Administrator's Rights. Try Windows Hotfixes and optional Programs. Then install McAfee when logged into that User ID.
I created a new user account on the computer, after I had removed McAfee from the computer.
On the new account, I re-installed McAfee Total Protection 2011.
The problem still persists, though.
Question: If McAfee is messing up like this, by always being stuck in some sort of 'updates necessary' cycle, does that mean that my computer is never TOTALLY protected from new threats? Or, despite this problem with McAfee, am I still protected pretty well by what I've got? Y'know, if I just left this alone, would my computer be alright in the long run? Everything else is working just fine with McAfee Total Protection 2011, by the way - this updating thing is the only problem that I'm having.
Something is not right here as this doesn't normally happen. You should contact Technical Support Chat and ask for escalation to a higher level if necessary.

Hi starryeyed,
Since you don't have a CD to reinstall Windows Vista from scratch, then is Windows Vista completely updated with all High Priority and Software optional updates? Is Service Pack 2 installed?
Is Automatic Updates Startup Type set to Automatic?
Is Background Intelligent Transfer Service set to Automatic?
Is Event Log also set to Automatic?
Um... I don't know much about computers. How would I check all of those things?
